I think you should define your storage requirements in terms of number of watches first....

I can offer my services - plenty of available storage at my house after a recent semi-purge. It depends on what kind of watches though..... :D

Totally the wrong way to do it ::facepalm2::. First find one that fits 12-24 watches. This will give you enough to start collecting one style. Next decide on the types or styles of watches you like, this will give you an idea of how many boxes you will need. Most new collectors can get by on a couple nice 12 watch boxes to start. $88. Be sure to be home to receive these before the wife sees them.

True that, but I defined it for him, least he thinks he can get by with a simple 6 watch box.

@cicindela, thanks for the sharp tips. I've been looking on Amazon for quite some time now but I feel like I spend too much time researching. It's come down to me getting a 12 watch box. I'm not in the right tax bracket(yet) to fill up a big boy case. Well, I could... If I wanted to get axe murdered.

You'll soon find that tax bracket doesn't matter. And the risk is worth taking. ;)

After buying a speedmaster date in 2006, i started googling for more info. Big mistake. What? Omega has vintage watches? Heyyyyyyyy, that's quite nice.... and so the madness began.

With just a few watches, they lived in a drawer, but as they seemed to reproduce in the dark, i started buying boxes. I was gifted a couple and ended up with about 10 large watch boxes. Most of them in the pic below. 20140126_224414.jpg

I didn't like the inconvenience of having to stack them up or keeping them back in the drawer/shelf/cupboard after i was done. 20150729_011947.jpg . So i spent an afternoon modding some high density foam which i really liked. The bracelets/straps go in the hole leaving just the watch heads visible. Yup, WATCH HEADS :whistling: . Look at all them watch heads....I could see all the watches & daily selection was made really easy. Unfortunately, they got dusty & as you can see, i ran out of space again.

So, i got my hands on some shipping crates & converted one for storage.

It wasn't ideal though & it was a little cumbersome with the heavy lid. I was looking around for wood to do a bit of carpentry, section it out, compartments, double layer, voice activated spring loaded cover, retina scanner..... problem was finding the wood. i could only get mdf or plywood, in 8' x 4' sheets. Want it smaller? Its $2 per cut.

I drew up my plans & decided i either had to invest in some power tools or get one made. I like working with my hands & who doesn't like power tools? Of course i also needed a workbench, router, jig saw, etc... I compromised & decided that if i didn't want to be single, i would convert an existing cabinet into something i could use.

Months of scouring garage sales, used furniture shops, flea markets, craigslist, facebook pages & even notice boards turned up nothing. Until I walked into a furniture store in a pricey neighbourhood one weekend & saw a tallboy that caught my eye. It had 4 large drawers & was made for linen/blankets. And, they could customise anything....

And that's how i ended up with this. Those are my 2nd choice handles,

    With a flip top!

To have each drawer customised would have cost too much, so i'm still looking out for some nice wood for a little weekend project.

Top draw, Omegas, 6 of them are out for servicing.

    The other drawers.. 20160912_110047.jpg 20160912_110103.jpg

Also a drawer just for parts

And one for straps, bracelets & buckles.

Sorry for the bad pics ;)

That is a nice collection you got going there. [emoji15] I have yet to arrive at a point where I need a custom place to store my watches. I only have 3 watches total.[emoji23] And only 1 vintage which is the Omega. But I think I already caught the bug.

Very nice tallboy by the way.

Something like mine, good job .

A word of warning. That matting you used will react to some plastics and also exude plastic oil and it will stain leather etc.

I got rid of mine and just used paper drawer liner until I can find something that doesn't react or give off chemicals.

Maybe some carpet tiles cut to size?

    Cheers

    Jim

Absolutely loving that solution. I currently store mine in sets of Bisley drawers, with peli foan linings. I seem to collect steel draws almost at the rate I collect watches!
