Heavily biased towards the Seiko SLA037 before, during, and after. 👍

I'm just here to post a photo of my sla017.
It really is perfect. Has me thinking that perhaps I should hunt one down....

The Seiko is quite a bit more compelling for my eye, likely the straight vs arrow hands is a major factor.

However the SPB149 has a lot of SLA037 for quite a bit less coin...one could likely have both the Omega and the "lessor" Seiko!

My heart wants to say Omega, but looking at the two watches objectively (and even factoring the Seamaster's bracelet), my head says Seiko hands down...

If we are considering the two models posted in the article -- I would have to go with the blue dial Seiko. BUT.... I would overwhelmingly choose the Seamaster 300 166.0324 over either of these two models.

I agree with you. The seamaster 166.0324 is imho the nicest diver ever made, although I like very much the Seiko shown in the report.

From the article the two main gripes about the SM are polished centre links, easily fixed. Bracelet issue when diving, again easily fixed with swapping it out for a 21mm tropic strap. Much cheaper way than adding a bracelet to the Seiko.
I have a seiko 053 and pound for pound it’s a great watch but the SM300 which I also own is the most over engineered watch I’ve ever owned and this review covers most of them. It really is a amazing watch so gets my vote.
If you could get the 037 with the sort of discount available on the SM300 (if you look hard enough) it might be viable to me as I think they are different enough to own both.

Japanese design lacks something. And not just in watches. It's easier to see with knives. Fantastic steel but lacking a bit of attitude. It's all about the little picture. No heft unlike the Omega. You feel the Omega but you just marvel at the Seiko attention to detail.

You visited Tokyo? Their architecture is pretty amazing

What do you mean their design lacks something?

😁

I would choose the Omega. I like the design more and also I think it delivers more for the money (*), even if the Seiko details are better finished. Right now, I cannot stop thinking that is only a higher-end version of the SPB149. And at 6.5k€, they should have put a spring drive inside

(*) and I thought that even before knowing the Omega cost nearly 1k€ less in Europe

.... and your avatar. ... 😁

If you know anything about my avatar, then you know that I am crushed and that the humiliation is too much to bear. You know that I accept the result and accept the reasons behind it, and furthermore give credit to our opponents.

If you know anything about my avatar you know that it is a club that will come together, will make changes, will reflect and will look to solve its problems in a way that the soci and all its fans can be proud of. Despite the misery, I'm proud of those colors even when sad and shamed by its current situation, because it's more than this year or last year or the year before. It's a struggle and an emblem for fighting your way and sometimes that way is lost, but it doesn't mean we won't find the path again. Thanks for noticing!

To me Japanese design is about beauty in it's most minimal form, adding only what is necessary to get a concept or aesthetic idea across. More attention may be given to harmonic balance, both in physical heft and in terms of design. Nature is often the source of inspiration rather than abstract or geometric sensibilities that westerners may rely more on. There can also be a beautiful fragility to Japanese fine goods, not to mention the famous Wabi Sabi embracing of impermanence, physical change, and natural & expected aging.

That red dial is very interesting it really pops. Is that a LE? I’m really not up on grand seikos other than seeing them here and other watch sites.

Thanks Walrus. This is a GS Heritage Autumn SBGH269, it is a limited edition of 900 pieces. The dial is incredible, especially in good light, the red shimmers between crimson to bronzey tones - similar to those seen in Japanese maples. Per Seiko, the dial texture mimics floor boards found in Japanese homes - this quality fades depending on the viewing angle and the light . I put it on a strap to enhance the color, the bracelet was a bit too polished for me. Thanks!

I keep coming back to the Spring cherry blossom version. Such a lovely piece but I have yet to see one in person. Yours is very nice!

Hope you were not offended but if you are, then I'm sorry.
It was a light remark from my part and in no way to offend.

I'm a Juventus fan. I've had my share of bad days too.

Not at all. Just raw disappointment and it helps to express the feelings. Thank you for your message, I mean it sincerely!

Interesting read. I love my GS, and would take the SMP 300 Diver over the Seiko in the article, but it's a closer call between these two. Still, that 37 is serious coin. There are quite a few divers in that price range (and below) that interest me more.
