Seiko Crown vs Seiko Crown Special

I am wondering if I should add any of these to my KS/GS collection, having read that Crown Special is the basis for the first GS.

Has anyone compared them and perhaps the first GS? How would you rate the finish/build quality?

The Crown Special came after the first GS. If you want the precursor to the first GS (or at least its movement), it's the Crown (without Special). The Crown itself was based on the Marvel. Sound like a good excuse to get yourself a nice Crown and a Marvel!

Mechanically speaking.. what so special about the Crown Special? Vs just Crown?

I only have single Marvel so far, the 5740C non-arabic dial.(which I know came much later)

That article describes it much better than I could. As I understand it, there is a direct line from the Marvel to the Crown and then the J14070 GS (and 57GS). That line then continues from the J14070 to the Crown in the form of the Special. The Marvel was also developed in different directions to the Gyro Marvel, Lord Marvel and Liner for example.

Is this article correct by the way?

It says there are no Crown Special of solid gold.

But:

What's your opinion?

That Caseback does not look like a Crown Special. Markings seem wrong. But maybe it could be special order case but I’m not convinced it’s original. Would want to see inside watch
Assuming it's a special edition or something, where would it be documented though? I wonder if there's any official Seiko reference.

I can't find any decent information source.

The author of the article I referenced, David Flett is on IG and maybe also OF. He would know. I’ll try to find his contact I have chatted w him before.

Ok, so quick update. I emailed Seiko, they told me to ask a local support center.. how would a local support center know more than the people in their central is beyond me. I emailed them again with pics from a website I found.

As for what I am up to, I just got a normal gold 14K filled Crown Seiko Special. There's a bit of green patina near the glass but it otherwise looks cool. Will be posting photos when I get to it. 😀

And.. done. It's gorgeous even in 14K GF. Case back is even.. mirror like. I tried taking a photo of the back but it's crap. Will retry tomorrow. There are some green spots around the glass btw.

Nice. can you take a picture of dial straight on with sec hand off the star beneath the Diashock text. Does it look like This?
The indices are 14k. Not the case. These all came with 14k filled case. Like the First GS. IMG_1422.png
