Might also be the case that at 9:50pm the date changeover is just starting to engage and that's taking just enough of the power to prevent the hands from moving past a slight imperfection in one of the wheels.

As an experiment, OP could try setting the time to the wrong AM/PM and see if that changes things.
I will thanks

Even if you discover it's the hands touching at 9:50pm, or if there is another reason and you can find a work around, after 10 years it really needs a service.

Yes it does overlap but you would think it would happen at 9:50 am too

Not if you're wearing it - you said that it didn't stop if you wore it.

What actual time did it stop when you changed the date to change at midday?

It still stopped at 9:50pm but will retry with the date change at 12 noon. Tonight I’m trying the watch on my nightstand facedown to see if this has any effect and the tomorrow I’ll try the noon change date.
Thanks

The only difference is the wearing then. So the fact that the hands rub at 9:50 must be overcome by the movement caused by wearing. They probably rub every every hour and a bit when they pass, but you're wearing the watch during the day so it keeps going and stops at the first passing after you take it off.

Not necessarily, OP should leave the watch off his wrist in the morning and see if it stops at 9:50 am. I don't think it will.

Ok!! I wound the watch and set it facedown at 1pm yesterday on my nightstand and as of 4:40am it is running great! I will let it run facedown until 1pm today and change the date change over to noon tomorrow, wear it till about 9pm tonight and repeat the facedown test.
….and a big thanks for all of you!!

If that passes I’ll change everything back the repeat the facedown test again…. The repeat with the face up test then repeat again … I’ll even try setting it up on a vertical and 4 positions tests to see if the problem persists in any other position than face up !!! Hopefully if all is good then as mentioned here it will be a simple fit the have the watch hands adjusted!

Also, am I correct about winding the watch? 20-30 winds and then hear the clicking sounds( assuming clutch)?

Yes.

And it needs a service at the 10 year mark.

The clicking sound is probably the mainspring slipping in the barrel (dried out braking grease) or the tail of a broken mainspring clicking around the barrel.

Just get it serviced, your watchmaker can tell you what was wrong with it.

Update!! My watch has been running great for the past week!! I set it up to change date about 10 times , making sure that I did not change the time between 9-4 …..first 1 time stop at 9:50pm then 2 time at 11:00pm and 12 the then the 3rd time stopped at 12.00 and from then on it has been working great……I wind it in the morning about 25 time until I hear the fist cluck click and wear all day and set it on the nightstand at 9pm….working great when I awake and rinse & repeat….!!!
