This one's not for me. True, the date made the original dial more complicated, but it had a reason (interesting date function). This one is still very busy, and not as interesting.

Then let me take back what I said and instead just remark: "Jesus, what a bloody ugly watch". 😉

What we used to call “a face made for radio”...

If they had gone with an interesting bezel instead of cluttering the dial with both hours and minutes I think it would have made a bit of a difference. I will be interested to see the resell price in a few years, low supply but this seems like a very niche Speedmaster.

There's a lot going on with that watch - not sure how I feel about it.

I do ... pass. 👎

Who wouldn't want a Speedy LE committing the 10th anniversary of a blog?!

Me.👍

You have got to be shitting me.

That it exists, or that is is sold out, or both? 😕

Interestingly this watch was announced with USA-based fans in mind whereas my recollection is that the ST2 Ultraman watches were all gone before the earliest US east coast risers knew about it. I was -- by surprise -- able to pay half and reserve the H10 via a nearby Omega Boutique. Deliveries planned for November. For others reading the thread above, the watch has a number of interesting design points -- best read about in Ben's article -- certainly along the lines that the first Speedy Tuesday and Ultraman editions do. Can't wait to see a lume shot!

So in summary this release is a homage in looks only to a widely available and much cheaper homage to the look and function of the Flightmaster watches. I quite like the look but what annoys me is that in using 1861 movement they have had to ditch all of the functions and features which made the coloured hands so necessary in the first place. The Mk40 at least needed differentiation between 24hr display, triple date etc etc. This is just a spray can job, the running second in particular looks daft.

Taken as a whole it looks quite striking but all the same it is just playing at it. I really like the straight lug case and find that an interesting diversion, especially as neither the original or Ur-Original watch had that. Two words: cobbled together.

It’s not a watch designed by Hodinkee - it’s a recreation of the watch Ben Clymer received from his grandfather. It’s a re-issue not a new design....
Far from a reissue.

And regarding BMW, yes they went overboard. Just look at BMW M3 CS, Avus/Telesto series for the M3/M4 (google that one if you don't know it), BMW M3 30 years, ... etc. All with the same current M3 model.
Just out of curiosity? What is the average life span of a BMW and that of an Omega?

Anyone know if that leather strap will be available from Omega? I think it looks like a real winner.

I'm on the West Coast and was able to reserve the Ultraman - it was teased the night before (along with the time it would be released).

I disagree - the Speedy Tuesday and Ultraman watches both have small details that only a vintage enthusiast would recognize - the applied metal logo, '60s dial font, flat-foot crown etc. (and the Ultraman adds to that with a stepped dial and a dot-over-90 bezel). This is just a paint job on the already existing FOIS / CK2998

??? If this operated like the PCA Speedy LE, then chances are Omega made the watches for Hodinkee for $xxxx/ each, and Hodinkee 'nets' the $6,500 - $xxxx - their expenses and shipping costs, etc. Not sure what you are saying/ asking.

Apologies. Was being sarcastic. But unlikely that Hodinkee gets a sum for pieces sold in the boutiques too?

Far from a reissue.

I agree - reissues tend to be closer in function to the original. This is more of a weak copy of a reissue, missing the date, day, month, and 24 hour indicator...

Two words: cobbled together.

Parts bin watch...take a little of this and a little of that, sprinkle in some dial and hand paint, and voila! Or should I say cha-ching! 😉

In the end these companies are here for one purpose - value for shareholders.

Cheers, Al

That it exists, or that is is sold out, or both? 😕

I think @padders and @Archer are spot on when they point out that this misses those elements that made the Mk 40 special from most other Speedmasters. This is a styling exercise, one that should have been aborted when the first drafts came on the board. But who knows, perhaps they wanted to see just how frenzied the Hodinkee crowd really is? See how far they could push it?

I will ask this - if this had not been marketed via Hodinkee, how many would have bought one? I'm guessing Omega would have a hard time selling those 500 pieces.

But on the bright side: at least now @SpeedyPhill can have his "practical" Speedmaster with radial numerals 😁 😁

Sounds like a risky all in for the brand reputation, if so, isn’t it? I can’t imagine that.

+1

One thing for sure ,,,,,,,,,,,
There is going to be quite an argument when it comes time to decide which one to vote for when we choose the OmegaForums LE case back

I agree 100% with this:
This is a styling exercise, one that should have been aborted when the first drafts came on the board.
😁

...but I really disagree with this:
I will ask this - if this had not been marketed via Hodinkee, how many would have bought one? I'm guessing Omega would have a hard time selling those 500 pieces.

I think there are many, many Speedmaster collectors out there that will shell out for ANY Speedmaster LE. And 500 is a pretty low number by Speedmaster LE standards.

And given the success of Speedmaster LEs since the Snoopy, I would guess that there are more than enough speculators out there willing to fill up the remaining slots...

I actually dig the watch, but don’t see it being a daily wear. Super sporty lookin’. When I looked in the shop earlier this morning their was one left, came back and nada. Got on the waitlist. Doubt it’ll come to fruition...

Rather hold out for that 50th next year😉
