All I see are people saying avoid Omega if at all possible since they seem to be rough with watches that come in for service.

Nobody says that at all, they do an excellent job its just that on vintage pieces their mandate is to restore it to as new condition which can mean replacing some old parts that are worn looking but original with brand new recently made replacements. None of that applies to a Cal 9300 / 8500 or other modern watch, I've certainly never heard of anyone ever claiming them to be "rough on watches".

Their QC is from like 30cm (don't quote that to be exact) without a loupe. They only hold it a distance away and eyeball the watch. Scratched/dinged hands and dials etc.... wouldn't be noticed with this method of QC.

I've only been on this forum for a couple of months and I've seen numberous people post about getting a watch back with flaws and how it's not uncommon. No experience by my part but I haven't read all that many threads (just recent ones mainly since joining) and the info is here.

The thread with the GSOTM dinged hand is the most recent thread mentioning Omega's QC issues. Since my first Omega purchase was a GSOTM I was really surprised.

Interesting, what did you do with it? Did you manage to sell it on or do you still have it?
I did manage to sell it, but I did forget to mention that the technician did clean it and do a rate adjustment on it along with a 6pt check to make sure it was fine.

This has been - and continues as such - an intriguing thread, straying off in various directions. Getting back to basics, like others have said, this doesn't look like a fake and if a 'pre-production' item that just adds to its collectability in my view. In the long run the lack of papers won't matter, but there will be considerable historical interest because it is not a run-of-the-mill watch.

That was what I was thinking when I bought it.

Still waiting for the Omega answer.

Something still looks different to me with the column wheel fins on the pics of a couple pieces in this thread with early serial numbers. I mentioned it earlier but can't put my finger on how to describe what I'm talking about. It's like the fin shapes are different or something or could just be an optical illusion. Would omega make a change to something like that so late in the process or is it a part that has been developed for a long time which would make my thinking completely wrong? Just looks different to me; although, I don't think the movement was made by anyone other than Omega.

Ridiculous. We read about an occassional bad experience from time to time, not about the 99,99% who are satisfied with the work done.

I've had dozens of watches serviced by Omega and not a single problem. They are not "rough on watches". That's just silly.
