There was no risk putting down a deposit, as they were reportedly 100% refundable. So it the release turned out to be desirable, and a low number, you would be set because you made the deposit. And if the release was a bit more iffy, and/ or in much higher #s, then you can go back to Omega and get the deposit refunded.
With savings accounts paying 0.2% interest, it's not like it costs anything to make sure you have one reserved.
actually, Omega released the gold 50th anniversary with not so exciting 3861, just about the same time the basel's. but instead it was a downer for all 321 lovers. possibly the much awaited new 321 may have underwent a back to drawing board reengineering. i do not expect to be100% or exact redo of the old amazing moonwatch. better yet, if aside from undeclared better material used, i will be willing to wait if it is known to be a modern 321 inside an aerodynamic design of a case retaining the shape of 105.003/012.
The flip side is if it had been an LE of say 950 watches, and they were ss (w/ no gold accents), those who did not make deposits would be left to battle it out in bidding wars for stock held by the resellers.
Really? Do you think Omega will make a LE SS in 950 pcs?
Another reason that just came up to me. Perhaps they wait to release the more commercial pieces in order to be able to sell first in the all-gold-anniversary model?

Keep in mind that a deposit would have no where near secured a piece at all since omega was not involved with this, the deposit would have secure a piece in whatever stock allocation your boutique had, so if 950 pieces were made and 20 of you had made a deposit in your boutique there is high chances some of you would have just get the deposit back.
Omega was involved with it (or at least Omega USA) -- this did not occur until about a week ago. The boutiques were supposedly given the go-ahead to secure deposits from interested customer (I actually emailed them about 2 months ago asking to be on the contact list when they started reserving watches).
Yes, it is possible a deposit would not guarantee a watch, but it would largely depend on how the reservation system was run, and how often reservation #s were passed on to HQ.
the SS version will have rose gold on the bezel, and a lunar landing module at the 9 o'clock subdial
Rose gold on the bezel sounds fine, can be done nicely. But putting the LEM on the seconds subdial sounds tacky and dumb.
The more I hear about it, the more I think I'm not gonna want it...
I've been chuckling away for a few days now at the naysayers getting their panties in a bunch about a little bit of gold, let's just wait a bit longer and I'm sure it will all have been worth the wait, but until then here's a little bit of gold.

Agreed, it can be done well on dial and bezel, it’s if the bracelet is two tone that will be a no from me.
