OEM 3861 Speedmaster Bracelet Worth It?

I recently bought a new Speedmaster, and it came with a canvas strap. I am considering getting a steel bracelet. I have looked at the Omega OEM and different 3rd parties as an option.

Is the Omega OEM the highest quality bracelet?

Is there a higher quality 3rd party option other than the ones made by Forstner?

Thank you!

I purchased the 3861 hesalite with bracelet. Personally, I don't like the vintage jingly-jangly feel. It is very comfortable though. I also have a current jubilee bracelet to compare it with. Not a fair match though as I don't think anyone can beat Rolex's bracelets. It just feels and handles more premium in every way.

If I were in your position though as you want "quality", I wouldn't settle for anything less but the OEM. I also have an Apollo 11 bracelet that I use more, as it has more the premium feel and look for me. I would certainly not go Uncle Seiko route as you mentioned that you wanted quality. I thought about Fortsner too but at the end of the day, I know that I will be ending up buying an OEM bracelet anyways so why bother 😀

I hope you got a decent deal on the watch. It’s almost always more economical to buy the watch with bracelet and add a strap afterwards. Anyway, I wouldn’t call the stock bracelet “vintage jingly-jangly” but I suppose it does have some play to it. I think OEM is going to be highest quality, followed by Forstner and then Uncle Seiko. The price difference is substantial so you’ll just have to decide if it’s worth the coin to go OEM.

Quality is subjective/relative, right? For the price of around US$750, I think Omega bracelets are quite good. And, most importantly, they are available for purchase. Most boutiques (in the US) have them in stock. ADs can order them as well.

I would not compare them to Rolex bracelets, which are not available for purchase. And, even if you find one in the secondary market, they are likely 3 - 4 times more expensive. If you take price out of this quality assessment and compare all kinds of bracelets, Rolex is mediocre at best.

If I were you, I'd start with Forstner. If I don't like it, I can always sell it easily and try something else. Staib makes quality bracelets if you like their design. Good luck!

Good points above as we all have opinions. Would you guys agree that the AT bracelet, even the previous version are better built bracelet than the 3861 bracelet?.. I guess more solid. Pls don’t get me wrong as I have a 3861 too and love it overall.

I love my 3861 bracelet. There's enough heft so you know it's there, but it's nowhere near bulky. I don't own any vintage bracelets for comparison, but I wouldn't consider the 3861 to be jangly. I have the vintage-style version of the Forstner flat link (ie, not the modern one), and it is definitely more jangly than the Omega.

One nice thing about ordering the bracelet separately is getting to pick between the brushed and polished options. I did the same thing as the OP, and I went for the polished option for my hesalite.

If you do decide to get an OEM bracelet, keep in mind that the new ones should come with the quick-adjust clasp, unless you find NOS from somewhere with the original clasp.

The only Forstner bracelet I have owned was their flat link and it very much had that “vintage feel.” I knew this going into it and while it is a nice bracelet, I moved it on quickly. If I didn’t already have several OEM bracelets, I would try one of their more robust options (without the stretch links).

I have had a number of Uncle Seiko bracelets designed for Omega’s. They are actually quite universal and fit a variety of non omega watches. I bought them for my Speedmaster but they seemed to be better paired with some of my vintage skin divers. Like Forstners, they have a “vintage feel” and while I know some appreciate that, it seemed a bit of a mismatch in quality to the Speedy they strapped to my wrist.

If your question was “should I get the modern Omega 1171/633 or the Uncle Seiko 1171?”, I would tell you to save your money and buy the Uncle Seiko- they feel and wear exactly the same…

However, since you’re inquiring about the 3861 bracelet… That is a quality bracelet. It’s made well. It has a bit of heft to it because of its build. It’s comfortable. And it’s robust without feeling like a brick is strapped around your wrist (looking at you OEM 1861 bracelet). I ended up buying a stand-alone polished/brushed 3861 bracelet for my 1861 Speedy and loved it.

Yes it is expensive but I do feel it is worth it. Later on, I ended up buying the Hesalite 3861 on bracelet so now I have the brushed/brushed bracelet to put on my 1861 when I want to.

Whatever you choose, good luck in your search and enjoy!

Thanks to everybody for this information. This is very helpful!!

it’s good to know that the Omega 1171/633 & the Uncle Seiko 1171?” feel and wear exactly the same…

I was also looking at the Forstner President 1450. Looks similar to the 1171? In general does Forstner make a bracelet that is better than Uncle Seiko? I would consider better to be - a good weight, not hollow feeling, not ultra weight, not flimsy materials, good fit and finish. Thank you!!

Here is the only direct comparison thread I could find of those two bracelets:

As Forstner incorporates stretch links into their design, you should also consider reading this thread.

Forstners has top notch customer service. As a result of spring failures, they now sell the bracelet both with the stretch links or without, and personally, I would opt for without.

I did the same as you, 3861 on a canvas strap, with the 12% discount on retail I was offered it was £1300 cheaper than if it had the OEM bracelet, and that made the difference to me of owning the watch or not. I really like the canvas strap but I also wanted a bracelet option. Paying the price for an OEM wasn't a option I could justify so I went with the Forstner contemporary flat link. This is a bit thicker than their original flat link, has a milled clasp and no stretchy links. Is it OEM quality no, but I have a SMP300 with the OEM bracelet and it holds up well to that. I think it is very good value for money and I am very happy with the fit, finish and feel of the bracelet on the wrist. Put the photo below against the Apollo 11 above and from a distance there's really not that much difference, I'm sure in the hand there would be a significant difference but as I'm most likely never going to do that, the Forstner will do for me.

I’m in the US- I bought my brushed/polished 3861 bracelet from an OB in 2021 for $720 + tax.

Not sure if it fits your watch but I’d get the bracelet for the older 1861, or the one that was sold with the 861 if you prefer that look. Both vastly superior over the light and flimsy modern bracelet you get with the 3861.

I believe with the recent price increase, OEM bracelets are now $760. With tax and all, changed my mind if it’s worth it or not lol.

Yeah the more I think about it…if it was going to be my only bracelet then maybe I would spend the cash on the OEM…but I see myself changing bands and bracelets regularly depending on the day.

I’d only buy the OEM if it was waaay better than the Fostner. I also don’t care what others think about my watch. It’s my watch. From what I can tell it sounds like the OEM is a 10 out of 10 for quality and the Fostner is a 7 or 8.

Which Forstner are you looking at? Everybody keeps posting pictures of flat links but the closest Forstner to the OEM 3861 is the bullet style. Maybe someone who has one of those could weigh in. I only have the Uncle Seiko flat link and it does not compare to the OEM at all.
