So, as a little background, I only got I to “nice watches” a few years ago when I picked up a Planet Ocean 8900. At the time I debated hard between the PO and the Speedy, but ended up going with the PO because I felt it may be a little more versatile in my daily life. Told myself I was done and this was going to be my one “good watch.” We all know how that goes- after a year or so, my eye started wandering to Speedys again and I picked up the 3861 about 2 months ago forming my current 2 watch rotation. (Not totally true as I sprinkle in a few much cheaper watches for fun a few times a month).

So far, the Speedy is great. Very different wearing experience than the PO but not necessarily better or worse. Just different. The PO is a tank, but the bracelet is amazing and with the microadjust it just feels really well balanced. So, while it is big it isn’t bad to wear at all. The Speedy feels much more refined with the new bracelet, leading to a different wearing experience. The bracelet is indeed comfortable, possibly a little “sharp” when compared to the PO but not something I would notice if you didn’t ask me. The microadjust is not in the same league as the PO as it is just one spot- basically a half a link. For me this has been a little bit of a negative as I have somewhat skinny wrists and must be a little more prone to changing wrists sizes with temp/humidity/etc. I can’t seem to get the same perfect fit for more than a few days with this set up. I seem to have to choose between good/slightly tight and good/slightly loose- I’ve elected the slightly loose version. While it fits well about half the time, when it is a little loose it feels less when balanced than the PO. (You may notice than when Daniel Craig wears this it seems to slide just a bit off center. Same for me.). That said, when it fits well, it’s awesome.

The watch itself is awesome. Looks great on the bracelet as well as a rubber and leather strap- earns the strap monster title for sure. I find the rubber strap to be my go to for casual use as the bracelet is a touch fancier than I’m used to at work (I work in an operating room, so this sticks out as a little formal for my taste but your work situation may dictate otherwise). I can see why someone can make this their one and watch since you can make it look good in any setting with a quick strap change.

It’s been as accurate as advertised- about 2-3 seconds fast a day. No quality concerns.

Interestingly, not that this is why we buy watches, but not a single person ever commented on my PO but I have had 3 come up to me to talk about the Speedy. Seems this one invites us watch geeks to nerd out a little!

So, in summary, for me this is a great addition to the PO. Probably not a one watch solution for me as the fit isn’t perfect and it’s a touch “fancier” on the bracelet that I would want in some situations. But the quality is amazing and it’s versatility legendary- so combined with a nice dive watch, I’ve convinced myself that I’m done for at least a little while….. but we all know how that goes!

I was holding out on the Speedy all these years, mostly due to lack of date. I have a 42mm Planet Ocean 8500 that’s pretty top heavy. But now in 2024 I feel the watch is pure jewelry, and these look so good, especially with the newly redesigned bracelet. Time to join the club.
