is that a term we can add to the OF Lexicon? "paperclipped"?

No we have to some how weave poor Doug into this. Poor @dougiedude was devastated after being so excited

Dudeeclip, Doug clip

" Just throw a dougee clip in it will be ok "

I think most of us have had to correct a thing or two along the way.

Wonderful article summarizing what all of us face all of the time.
The ultimate truth is as you stated:

"But the most rewarding kind of watch is still one that you bought that was already complete, and ideally all original. There is still no better find than the one owner sock drawer find."

After that, each of us needs to prioritize what is important.

Time to invest in papaerclip futures 😀!

"There is a code of ethics that fellow collectors expect of each other, and your morals will guide you when the community consciousness is not there to help you with that."

A++

The diminishing pool of vintage watch parts reminds me of a story that I heard many years ago. There is a well known vintage aircraft collector who, for many years, was buying up whatever V-12 engines/parts he could find to support his "fleet". One day he and a friend of mine who worked for him were standing in his warehouse looking at the floor to ceiling racks filled with pickled engines. The collector turned to my friend and said that it was a good thing he was able to save all of these engines and keep them from "the hoarders". My friends predictable response was "we ARE the hoarders".
I guess it really depends on where you are in your obsession, and what you need that others have.

Great read. Hope I don't break a hammer spring. Is there no way that a skilled watchmaker or machinist could make a hammer spring?

I believe there are after market (BestFit?) Versions our there. Omega may have some in their own Repair Centers too. Who knows?

This brings up an interesting point. Wonder if some after market folks will come up with parts in a sort of “grey market”. I’m sure most would like to see their vintage watches running for a long long time and even Omega and other watch brands need the glow of the vintage watches to further the legend of owning something special that is linked to an iconic piece (think PN Daytona). If not after market, there should be a way for maybe even Omega to feed the market with some parts maybe.

I love it. As cal 321 parts get increasingly scarce, collectors will post pictures and there will be comments like, "Awesome pinion, thanks for sharing!" "Never saw a third wheel that was cleaner. Dibs!" "OMG! That balance wheel is causing a stirring in my...oh never mind!"

A balance complete is a beautiful thing to behold though the patina covered plastic of a NOS Omega package.
