Not quite as important as Omega vs. Rolex; but a close secondary debate

Context? Can’t get Omega Forum on one of my Rolexes, or one of my Omegas. How can one compare electronic gadgets to mechanical watches? I use my watches to tell the time. I use my PC to do projects. My iPad does email better than my watches.

Apple or PC... What's your preference and why!
Linux.

Because SunOs before that, and PrimOs (related to Linux via Unix and Multics) even before that. I don't regret leaving CDC JCL to decompose in long past memory.

If you want vintage -- vi or emacs?

Apple is trash. Give me linux and android. And what's left of windows. Apple can act like a real company but they enforce liberal policies on their platform. Fk apple!

Been an Apple guy since 1999.

I went for the design software and intuitive OS - I stayed for the "liberal policies" ::facepalm1::

Just curious, can you explain further?

Apple since 1984, with a brief PC turn in the mid-90s. The modern MacOS is Unix-based, so one can use Unix apps seamlessly on it. I switched from Sun to Mac for scientific computing when Apple brought Jobs back and the based OS X on the Next Unix system.

And emacs all the way!

Apple for desktop/laptop computing. As Donn Chambers posted, it's really Unix underneath so when the GUI gets to be too cotton candy, there's always the command line. Also, Windows is really awful in my opinion. Windows makes me want to throw the computer out the window every 10 minutes or so. MacOS, only once a day. Yes, the hardware is overpriced, but at least generally it's good hardware once you've got it; the same cannot be said of PC hardware. And I was a Next user back in the day, so it's somewhat familiar.

I really wish Linux were stable enough to use. But I spent way too much time chasing the Bug of the Day instead of getting my actual work done.

Emacs, absolutely. (I really wish there was a branch of Gnu Emacs version 18 for Mac, for when you just don't need all the different fonts and faces and multiple panes...)

Hi Guys

I bought my first Mac July of 84. My friend was a developer... I was a kid then.......
Been using them since finder 1.1g

I remember when a single box of 10 micorfloppies ( 3.5 ) single sided 400k discs would hold EVERY piece of published Mac software...

I mod them... added internal hyperdrives , Dove memory upgrades ...... ( not for the faint of heart... ) I was hired at one job on the spot when the partner there could not install a hyperdrive, During my interview the other partner said it would not work out with me... and as i left saw "Bob" trying to do then install... I said " need some help?" he said " You think you can do it ?" I replied " i know I can " 30 seconds later after i installed it they hired me..... hahahahaha

I always loved the elegance of the Mac OS.... even now with unix under the hood.....

What I love about the Mac platform... it allows people to do what they want to do...and not thinking how to do it...

Good Hunting
Bill

PS I also use Windows etc....

I don't find any of these things intuitive, and am currently using Android. My family is firmly in the Apple camp, but I find it irritating in various ways.

Apple for pleasure/home computing. It has easier user interface and sync all of my apps. However, I do use PC at work, it's more versatile for office applications.

100% of home stuff done on a iPad. Used to be a iPad mini.

Don't have a need for a computer at home since 2013.

Mrs STANDY has the latest Razer laptops for her entomology stuff but never go near it. Too many buttons and lights 😒

Yes.

Same answer as when they used to offer me 3 desserts in Biz class and asked me to choose.

I have an iPhone, a PC and Android tablet.

A foot in all computing worlds.

My biggest issue with Apple is them always trying to upsell you something. That and the lack of easy memory expansion keeps me from wanting their tablet or computer.

But I love my iPhone.

I left Windows when Vista came on scene and very much appreciated Jobs-era Apple. Probably moving to the android and Linux pastures soon.

Love my iPad, love my iPhone, but all my docs have been on a PC for as long as I can remember so PC it is.

There's a lot less difference between mobile devices than there was, and these days I spend almost all my time on the web. I now just use Android and ChromeOS, Unix in the cloud for shells and servers, resorting to Mac just for graphics work.

Apple ][ 1978 - 1986
Mac 1986 - 1998 and 2004 - present
Windows 1998 - 2004
MVS/TSO 1986 - 1990
Unix 1988 - present (many variants, and almost always vi)
iPhone 2007 - 2009
Android 2009 - present
ChromeOS 2016 - present
