[next one! ] Any red flags on authenticity for this 1016?

Hello everyone!

My hunt for a decent and affordable 1016 continues...
This one has serial number 224610x = 1970. Caseback engraved with II.69. Movement 1570. Oyster bracelet 7206, Deployant clasp with date 2 65.
I guess the dial should be a matte Mk1 frog foot, but seems to be Mk3. So could be a legit early service dial. I'd be ok with that if it's genuine.

Anything I'm missing or should be aware of before trying to get a good price?

You’re on the right track, this 1016 sounds like a solid piece overall. A Mk3 dial on a ‘69 case could easily be a service replacement, which is acceptable if everything else lines up. It’s a common occurrence, especially with early Explorers that had dials swapped during servicing.

there are a few key areas to double-check. Confirm the dial is genuine and hasn’t been tampered with or relumed, focus on close-ups of the coronet, lume plots, and text.

The bracelet (7206 with a 2/65 clasp) predates the case a bit, so it may not be original but is still a quality match.

Sharp chamfers and clean lug holes will hold value. All in all, you’re close, just dig into those details and use anything off-spec to help with negotiating. I hope this helps

Thank you very much, @Coreyyt

This is the only thing I can't check further than the pictures above.. But the printing is sharp and matches Mk3 dials. The lume colour can match an early 1970s tritium. Unless it's relumed with that objective... not sure how I could further verify that. There won't be any radioactivity either way.

If the dial printing looks sharp and matches Mk3 traits, that’s a good sign.

The lume color being period-correct is promising. Relumes can be hard to spot, but if everything looks clean and consistent, it’s likely fine. Use the uncertainty to negotiate, it’s still a solid piece if priced right.

Thanks!
It's a local auction, so not negotiating. But you greatly helped me defining my limit.

You are going to need to check the engravings and the case for corrosion. The crystal is in bad condition as well.

I'm pretty disappointed 🙁

Yes, but they bid $10K more. That's what I tell myself to help me sleep at night 😉

Yea... kinda... just 200 more than I bid. But it could have gone much higher. Who knows. It went past my maximum budget. That's it.

I'll surely be posting more 1016's for review. Is it better to start a new thread each time, or to reuse this one?

I’m thinking reuse

Hi all,
Here is the next candidate! I'm feeling good about it.
Serial number and caseback date match to 1969. The "frog foot" dial matches that, too. Hands have the proper length. Text on dial is sharp. Movement looks proper.

Am I overlooking something?

AND, how would you rate the case? I think there was some polishing in the past, but doesn't look excessive to me. What are your views on that?

Case is poor
Thanks!
I did notice that lug hole, too. Anything else that makes you conclude "poor"?
