New Speedmasters: Is 44,25mm to big for daily wear?

As far as the Speedmasters are concerned: I always had the impression that they wear a lot smaller than the measurements (42mm or 44,25 mm respectivley) suggest. A Rolex Explorer II wears much bigger than a Moonwatch for example, yet both watches are 42mm. I guess the reason is that the bezel of the Speedmasters is smaller than the case. Does anyone know the diameter of the bezels of the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch and of the new CoAxial Speedmasters?

Maybe we need something like this for watches:

I agree on the Exp2 wearing larger than other 42mm watches...just not sure with the Polar Explorer 2 if the white dial is a signifant factor...white dials look larger, black is always slimming.😉😀

Yeah, that's why I think bezel diameter is among the most important things in sizing a watch. The Moonwatch's bezel is still only 39.7mm, around the same size as most of the classic Rolex sport watches. The little built in crown guards of the Moonwatch artificially inflate the size number to 42mm, but it is really more inline with the size of the old Explorer II, rather than the new Explorer II. I'd imagine these 44.25mm Speedys fit more like the current Explorer II.

That's partly why I bought the old Explorer II. I also don't care for Rolex watches over the traditional 40mm (bezel) size. 😀

FWIW, I noticed the other day that my "39.2mm" Aqua Terra 2500's bezel is more like 38.5mm, but I'd need some proper calipers to be sure.

Good points on the bezel size. The internal dial diameter is also a key factor in the overall visualization of the watch. The the Explorer 39mm wears pretty much the same as a 40mm 16610 Sub.

Agreed the dial/crystal is also important, but disagree about the Explorer 39mm. The Explorer/DJ 36mm and 16610 Sub share the same crystal size (Exp 39 crystal is 1.5mm-2mm larger,) so they read similarly on the wrist, which is why I bought a 36mm DJ and 16610.

My Co-axial Moonphase is 44.25mm, the outer bezel edge running from 10 across to 4 measures approximately 40mm.

Well, going against my early YOC/RSPB roots and killing two birds with one post😲, I certainly don't think the rather slim Kiwi below can pull off my trio of Rollies, and if you look at the three watches together I personally see little visual difference between the modern Explorer and the BLNR dials, but on the wrist the BLNR certainly feels more substantial.

Going back to @kingsrider 's BMI comment, I have to admit that when I actually saw some Kiwis live after a trip to Waitomo/NZ, I was amazed as to how they were indeed rather fat, juicy, well rounded and much bigger than I had imagined*...an early colonizer without an ecological conscience would certainly have wanted to roast a few over a hot fire (who knows even started a KFK franchise?😲)....but I digress, "fat" living Kiwis with their mini wings, would still have a significant challenge pulling off any modern sports watch....and they would certainly have a hard time trying to see the blue GMT hand of the BLNR, probably preferring the orange hand and lume of the 42mm Polar Explorer 2😀

I miss Dennis.
I agree, I also miss the lighthearted side of Dennis (and his sidekick Megan Girl), but not the aggressive rants of either, and certainly not some of the occasional bullying that the "squirrel" engaged in with new OF members , i.e. when Dennis would metamorphose from a cute red squirrel to a vicious grey squirrel😁::stirthepot::

I don't know if it is pure coincidence, but the OF has indeed been incredibly civilized during 2017...I sometimes feel that it has become a bit too boring🥱 and the occasional forum fight / rant would indeed be a nice change to get the adrenaline going. It would certainly have been fun seeing Dennis react to the 120 page thread on the Speedy Tuesday.😲😁

Finally, I have to ask @kingsrider, if the thread title is clearly a question on watch size, why have you bothered to post something here and not just move on and ignore the thread completely? If you have got this far reading this post, hopefully you are now bored to death🥱🥱🥱🥱 and will leave the fat/slim watch discussion alone to those that do indeed have to worry about their waist / wrist size, Kiwis included*😜😁

The bird is not guilty that it's from New Zealand. And you want even to kill two of them [emoji848]

Disclaimer no way etc [emoji41]

I think it perfectly illustrates your dial comment, and the Explorer 39 and new Exp II read similarly on wrist, due to dial size similarities.

It depends on a lot of factors. I can wear my 45.5mm POC 3313 but not the newer ones as they are thick. I've got 2 42mm a Speedy and an skx and a 40mm Sinn 903. The sin looks the largest and the Seiko arguably larger then the speedy looks the smallest, most likely due to the crystal size of the Sinn and the short lug to lug on the SKX.

Additionally my 7.5 inch wrist is not like my buddies. We can both wear the the 42's but the 45.5 looks ridiculous on him. This is based on both of our GF's thoughts.

My GF has a 42mm Seiko with a flieger dial that looks to large for me as it has high lug to lug distance she rocks it on thick NATOs and it looks great on her 6.25 inch wrist.

Everyone is different, watches that appear the same size can look drastically different on wrist.

TLDR: you have to try it on.

Hi everyone,

thanks for all your your replies, they have been very helpful (even if I didn’t have the time to comment on all of them, I’ve read them all with great interest).

I’ve been to the city today and tried on some watches:
- Explorer (Ref. 214270, 2016 model)
- Speedmaster Moonwatch (Hesalite)
- Speedmaster Co-Axial (Caliber 9300)
- Speedmaster Moonphase (Caliber 9904, Baselworld 2016)

My conclusions:
- The Rolex is a fine watch but I want a Speedy! :-D
- All Speedmasters looked great on my wrist. 44,25mm is certainly the limit, but it does not look ridiculously oversized.
- Now I am going to wait (very impatiently…) until the new Speedmaster Racing models arrive. If this new model is all that I hope for, I will buy it. If not, I will get the original Speedmaster in hesalite - because _if_ I have to make a compromise, at least this one will save me a lot of money. Which I can then use to buy another watch…

Sounds like a plan, eh?
Great plan sir. I applaud your patience. I really hope you go the cal 9904 route that is going to be great or the original speedy pro moonwatch.

Me I saw the Hesalite Speedy pro moonwatch and kind just had to have it. I thought for a while about going for a pre loved cal 9300 but in the end what swung it for me was, the brand new current incarnation of the original watch that went to the moon that is a design classic and loved around the world was available with the very nice box and goodies running at a little under $3000 on the steel bracelet. I had 5k to send on my new watch watch but just could not resist the current version of the NASA flight approved steel backed watch. I have had it for 12 weeks 2 days 23 hrs as I type and I do not regret it one little bit. I spent some of the money I saved on the black croc clasp strap. In the presentation box was the Nato + Velcro and an omega loop plus change out tool. So apart from swimming / diving. I'm covered for every situation or event.

O I have a blue dial quartz seamaster 2541.80 for swimming diving and the beach generally (got that in Hermosa Beach in 2006). I keep it tested and serviced and cleaned. Relatively cheep watch, I think generally unloved on here, but super accurate and takes a knock or three.

My Co-axial Moonphase is 44.25mm, the outer bezel edge running from 10 across to 4 measures approximately 40mm.

Now I'm surprised. I would have guessed that the bezel would be at least 42mm in diameter. Does the case really add 4,25mm to the total size of the watch (the pushers and crown are not measured, right?!) ? 🤨

Answering the original question, it's totally subjective.

I don't think any of these look too big on the wrist but I find the new, larger, Speedmaster are too big for me (I have 8 inch wrists). I own a couple of vintage Speedmasters and find their proportions perfect but the newer ones just feel too high. The strange thing is that I also have a Bubble which sits 20mm off the wrist but the curved case and lugs make that feel much smaller. My daily wearers are all around the 39-42mm Mark, so maybe that has a bearing on my thoughts. I'm also very happy wearing down to a 34mm or smaller on a bund strap.

Bottom line is you have to put one on and keep it on for half an hour while you get the feel for the watch, then make up your own mind.

The bezel width is 40mm, the case is about 42.25mm as the crown head only sticks out about 2mm from the case side. So basically it is a 42mm watch with a bit extra for the crown. Now I understand that when I tried it on it looked and felt like a normal moon watch.

The lesson here is ignore the numbers, just try one on and you will know instantly if it is right for you or not.

I really can't see the OP settling just for one watch...we all know that once you buy your first luxury watch, you will inevitably feel the urge to buy a second one down the road...he is about to take red pill.😁

He could have a great two watch collection with a Speedy 44.25mm first and a more dressy but versatile watch later on, perhaps a Globemaster.

Bingo! I'm the guy who spent my entire life thinking that spending more than $50.00 on a watch was absolutely ridiculous. Then I succumbed to an (entry level) Seamaster about five weeks ago. A couple of weeks later I added a Speedmaster. Now I'm waiting on my new Seamaster chronograph to arrive. So much for my life-plan....

I think the diameter looks great on you but it is a bit of a fat watch. my 2225.80 is tall but i soon got used to it. go for it.

Yeah, me too. I'd love to see these mew watches next to a Moonwatch.
