My Speedy now runs +2-3 sec/day on the wrist. Was 10+ until my AD checked and found it was magnatized ( most likely from the magnetic covers on my Kindle and iPhone case) You'd be surprised how susceptible the Speedmaster is to magnetic forces. A simple $10 watch demagnetizer from ebay can make a real difference in accuracy and a cheap non-dampened pocket compass will reveal if your watch is magnatized.

They have definitely gone up like crazy since then. I paid right at 3k at the same place about 4 years ago. For one on a leather strap, totally legit AD. I considered joma this time but that would have been $4300 and I just figured I might as well get a legit 5 year warranty.
They've gone up, but what I was saying was, the solid, long-time "gray" dealer individuals like Kringkily might have probably got you one with a freshly stamped card for way less. But I have noticed that he used to have new Speedmaster Pros listed for sale constantly and now it seems like not so much. Anyway man, you got the watch and that's all that matters.

EDIT: For example, this one is sold recently but ...

The solid case back model has a ferrous cover for the watch movement, so should be reasonably resistant to magnetisation? I am assuming a see-through case back version would be more susceptible... Also, has there been any change in the anti-magnetic cover over the years? For example, 321 versus newer?

That’s a great price. I think it would be worth that even if Omega doesn’t honor the warranty.

Most movement watches, depending on their construction, are quite susceptible to becoming magnatized, especially the balance springs. I believe this is why Omega has put so much effort into their newer designs meeting METAS standards. Perhaps Archer will add some additional information here. The Speedmaster, even with a anti-magnetic shield, was designed in the 50's when we didn't have anywhere near the electronic/magnetic environment that we have today with all our "devices", many of which are inductive. Something as simple as an iPhone case with a magnet closure on my belt where my wrist holds my watch in near proximity for most of the day has an effect. I now carry the phone on the other side away from the watch while looking for a non-magnetic case. I'm going back to work ( I'm retired) for a few months at the Hospital as a Biomedical Technician where I'll be in close contact with a LOT of electronic devices, I'll be wearing my METAS Certified Seamaster for that.

I’m still running 12-15 fast. Not super impressed. I guess I’ll try the demagnetizer. It’s a beautiful watch but it is literally worse than my Vostok amphibian which runs about 6 fast. I will say it seems to be pretty consistent so maybe it just needs a slight adjustment.

I had purchased a new moonwatch in box. Had the same issues, 30s fast. Mine also did not line up when reset to zero. Sent it to Omega to get things lined up.. Its a pain to buy a brand new watch.. then have to wait over a month to send it off and get it back..

Really sorry to hear that especially with such a storied and time-tested piece. Hope they repair or replace to your satisfaction. Always tough to send back a new watch, given the time and anticipation invested.

My new (bought in April) Seamaster runs about 4 seconds fast per day, which is well within specs but enough to annoy me (in a month that's 2 minutes off) so I feel for you. Let us know if demagnetizing it helps. I figure since it's new and I don't have my phone or anything else close to my watch, that's not my issue.

If you place the watch crown down when you're not wearing it, it will run a little slow and make up some of that time. I believe that's true for all mechanical watches, although I have no idea why.

Positional variation is not consistent watch to watch. What mine does one way is not necessarily what yours will do. Aside from a timer the best way to tell is to try it in different resting positions. There really isn't a short cut. Gravity and friction all play a part.

have fun

+4 sec/day is excellent, if that rate really annoys you you might not be a candidate for the mechanical watch world.

Update! I bought a cheap amazon demagnetizer and sure enough it is now +5/+6 per day. That's plenty accurate enough for me. I guess I will be giving it a monthly degaussing treatment! Thanks for the tip.

Was this brand new when bought at AD ?
Yes, annoying. At least it is more accurate than my Vostok now !

I come from the Rolex world, so I'm used to a bit more accuracy.

But you make a good point. In my defense, I am easily annoyed by just about anything.

OK, maybe that's not really in my defense. LOL

I agree, my Milgauss can be zeroed out just by flipping it up and down at night. After a month of ownership my watch is currently 1 sec fast and it will be about zero tonight at 11

Hey guys,

Picked up a new moonwatch from an Atlanta AD. Probably should have went to jomashop but I wanted the 5 year warranty and peace of mind given Omega’s recent grumpiness. I got it for 4815 which isn’t great but way better than the 5100 my local ad wanted.

Anyway, as I have owned a moonwatch before, I knew what to expect. Honestly, it’s the coolest watch available. It’s combination of classic looks and unsurpassed history place it at the top of my list of watches.

Knitpicks...

1. One thing I just may not have noticed before is the band is kind of sharp feeling. I have a seamaster and a Milgauss and their bands are buttery smooth by comparison.

2. I also noticed that the hands have fairly crude paint on them. Is that normal? Now this is under magnification, not visible with the naked eye. The lume , however, seems to be applied with precision.

3. The watch is new, but I am gaining about + 15 per day. I remember my last ran slow so I am happier, but I am curious to see if it settles with a routine. I have been able to keep my Milgauss to zero by rotating leaving it flat on its back and face down.

4.. Does anyone have any tricks for slowing down your moonwatch?

Guys, I am totally knit-picking. I love the watch and am really just trying to chat about these things.

They are all different, but mine slows down when it rests crown down.

Good to hear that the accuracy has improved but never heard a new Speedy pro was missing out 15 sec.

Quite a few in my research. But again, it appears it just got magnetized at some point.
