New Member - Looking for Advice

Hello everyone,

New member here! I’m embarking on a watch journey as I look to purchase my first nice timepiece. I’ve really enjoyed reading through the posts and learning more about Omega!

Initially, I had planned to buy a vintage Rolex to celebrate my retirement, but after discovering the late 1950s Omega Constellations, I haven’t looked back.

I’ve been doing my best to avoid "Franken-watches" by reading countless posts online, watching YouTube videos, and trying to understand which dials, crowns, calibers, and other components are correct for each model. However, with no definitive resource outlining every Omega reference and its correct parts, I’m feeling overwhelmed and hesitant to make my first purchase.

I’m specifically looking for a period-correct Omega Constellation with a date and pie-pan dial. I want to avoid over-polished cases or repainted dials. At this point, I’m willing to pay a bit more for a trustworthy seller who can guide me through the process.

Any advice or recommendations on a reputable/trustworthy seller?

Best,
Mike Mac

If you havent already done so, look through this long but wonderful thread to see many (probably not all) vintage Constellations owned by OF members. This will help you focus on a reference or 2 to target a search.

Once you have a reference zero in on all the details so you know what to expect with case, dial, movement etc. You can ask for opinions here anytime members are glad to help. Ask before you pull the trigger for best results.
If you are new to this then EB is probably not the place to shop- you can follow Private Watch Sales thread here from trusted OF members, as well as Watches for Sale with known dealers. You can DM a seller to inquire about a listing.
There are dealers out there that cater to the "one off" buyer who wants just one watch and doesnt want to go through the search, but expect to pay 2x or 3x cost in those situations.
Best advice is to take your time and enjoy the hunt.
Also if you havent found Desmonds blog that is a wonderful reference for everything Constellation.

Good luck and welcome to OF!

There are several dealers who sell a lot of expensive legitimate Omegas, so if you're ok paying a premium, you should contact one of the usual suspects.

Well, if it is not too much work, could you show the watch that you are buying so some senior members may give you advices.

I think the OP is looking for recommendations on where to buy.

I’ll second @SOG53 in trying to pin down a specific reference to focus on.

E.g. Are you particularly looking for a lyre-lug reference (which are late 50s/early 60s) or more interested in a pie pan dial?

If you are looking for a pie pan with a doglegged case the reference no. is 168.005, or (the older and a bit less seen) ref. 14902.

Thanks for all the recommendations.... Very helpful.

There are a few reference numbers that I really like for my first watch. The 168.005 is one of them. Not too worried about the strap. I've seen a few similar ones on the Watch Enthusiast's website; however, he currently does not have any that has a white dial color, the arrowhead hour marks and the crosshairs (not sure what they are called), I like the white dial, so if I did my research right, the "solid gold" or 18k is all gold. For all I know, this could be a "franken watch" and Omega never produced one with these actual specs.

Also, I saw a pic or two of some crystals with a magnifying feather over the date. Were these reproductions crystals?

Thanks again, everyone for the advice. I am digging a little more into the older discussion threads here. This is a great resource.

Respectfully,

Mike Mac

Couple of things @mwmcateer9534@gm

The fact that you quite like doglegs (168.005) is exactly why I asked the question about what you are looking for - as they are 60s watches. (As opposed to 50s)

Watch enthusiast can have some good watches (and some not so good) but they are very expensive.

Date Magnifiers may be an aid to ageing eyes and could be ordered at purchase but are not standard on a Constellation ( leave them to Rolex. )

Lye lug Constellations with arrowhead dials are the most desirable of Constellations - which means cost and competition.

The one you show looks to be a ref 14393, which is a late 50s early 60s lyre lug reference.
It looks to have a pretty good case, with a replacement crown but it would be impossible to assess the quality of the dial with any certainty.
(And the bracelet is generally considered to be the wrong type of BOR for that kind of case)

Condition and Originality directly relate to value and cost.
You will need to post clear hi-res images if you would like the members advise on the condition of any watch you are interested in.

Hope that helps.

it's not just about piepan if you dive into vintage connie. piepans have different durable calibers. look at them carefully and know which one won over rolex in terms accuracy, at least in those era.😉😄👍

Hello Mike Great first post, thats the way to do it!

If I was in the marked for a vintage Omega, I would consentrate on the for-sale section on this site. All the bad exaples poping up have given me a scare. You need to have 200 posts to post there, but read the rules:

Thank you. I spend time each night trying to educate myself on Omegas. This will be my homework tonight! Thank you again. Respectfully, Mike Mac
