New career? Back to school? Anyone else?

Taken a couple practice test, taking another tonight when I get off work and tomorrow. The test itself is coming up quickly and is on Tuesday.

I will say that the vocab is difficult, and the math is somewhat extreme in my opinion for what I'm going to school for. I wish this wasn't just a general test and dealt more with at least the program I'm going for. I know that's not possible so it is what it is I guess.

I think I'll do fine just wish I had given myself more time to study. With a new baby at home and work, it gets are in 2 1/2 weeks to study for the test 😀 .

Applications were submitted already to the schools im interested in, so the test is the last piece of the puzzle.

Two schools that really interest me and offer the best programs are also different slightly. The one I really want to attend is 20k more, but both schools are ranked about the same for the program offering. Wonder if it would be smart to spend more just because I like a couple of the classes more at the more expensive school then I do the cheaper one?? Hmmmm, luckily I have time to decide.

Thanks for all of those who have given me your wise and solid advice.
My advice is don't borrow excessively for the degree.Attend a good program but one that makes economic sense too.

And....don't go to Law School. Just don't do it. Trust me.

Haven't updated the thread in some time and thought today would be a great day.

So far classes have gone pretty good surprisingly. We are only 2 weeks away from finishing up the first semester and I'll say for not attending school in several years, I should pass this first class with a B??? Not to brag or anything, but a B I can live with haha!

Onto the new career section. I have recently quit my job with a steady income to both go after my graduate degree and to start a new company/venture. While school is going good, the new company is doing ok at this point as well. We are sitting at over 3,000 followers on FB and hope to get to 4,000+ followers by end of August when I plan to start shipping orders. This is my first attempt at becoming an entrepreneur, and it hasn't been easy but it has been exciting. Every time an order is placed with us, or when a deal works out with a supplier, too reaching followers on FB goals, it's been a good time so far.

My wife gets a little worried since orders aren't just flowing in on a regular basis, and for sure won't pay the bills, but I hope we'll turn a tide in August! I'm giving myself till the end of the year to hopefully supplement what I would have made if I had kept my job with this new venture, and if it all works out, I have a list of products I'll be adding to the website as well within that time frame. I think I have enough ideas to keep growing our streams of revenue as long as the market likes what we have to offer!

I think you're likely right on there being a bias towards reporting the positive outcomes over the negative.

However, I've found the most successful people I know have taken some swings and either missed or risked missing, until eventually achieving success. Capitalism rewards those willing to take on a risk premium...

As well, when you take on a risk like a major career move, it tends to cause you to refocus and work harder, thereby increasing your likelihood of success.

I take your points, all reasonable. Question, why are there so many people down on their luck in every major city I have been too in the world. according to the 100% success life change stories rate, there should only be successful people out there.

My poor efforts in my earlier years in college did affect my chances for grad school. Id have to redo a lot of science glasses if I had wanted to do grad school, actually got rejected from both PA schools because of my poor transcripts. We all learn differently I suppose. Still ended up in health care, and have my custom jewelry business on the side.

Because people broke and drug addicted don't post on this forum, or generally bring attention to themselves, that's why. I would not have posted my experience if I was in a failure mode of my life. My first business I lost everything. Literally, I moved to a cheaper state just to afford to move forward. My wife and I slept on the floor for months...by God if there is one thing that help your success it's a good woman, she will double your joys and halve the pains. We left both our families (parents, siblings, etc) to chance a better life and start over . That isn't the only story but thankfully with hard effort it worked out. At least here in the US, nobody cares about your failures....there is always opportunity to reinvent yourself and build again. Those with the will can do it. As they say, giving up is the only true failure .

A short anecdote...I love hockey and my early adult life was during the Gretzky era. He broke virtually every record there is. He was asked one time how he did it. He said every shot he took was at the net, and some went in. Perfect. Every shot you take in life should be toward your goals. The older I get I realize the simplest and oldest of philosophies are the most true.

We're getting pretty deep into it here, but my thoughts on this are a combination of mental illness, substance abuse, trauma and unfortunate circumstances in the early part of their lives. Furthermore, I'm lucky - I've been exposed to a range of people during my life and I saw university and a career as a viable path because I saw others in my sphere go down that path before me.

If you don't have others around you showing you the way, it's much harder. Even for me, I'd love to be more entrepreneurial, but my family has taken more traditional professional paths, as have most of my friends and acquaintances, making it slightly harder for me to know the right foot forward in that world.

Resiliency and delayed gratification are key indicators of future success - being able to bounce back when things don't go your way and put off current happiness for future success... So individuals down on their luck likely have been impacted by one or more of the initial factors I mentioned leading to difficulties in resiliency and delayed gratification.

And they likely don't post on luxury watch forums.

Nice to read to everyone's stories; thanks for starting this thread, @Rodmar. Hoping to learn more about your business.

Just as a side note - I am an oncologist. In this field, no matter our best efforts, people die. Some die young. Nothing hits me in the gut harder than when I see someone my own age (I am in my mid-late 30s) die of cancer. Someone with kids my age. Then I think about dreams and passions unfulfilled...it is the rare person who says "I've lived a good life, the life I wanted to live." We should all strive for that. Always. Sh*t happens in this world, to good people and to bad.
Then I'm sure you see many people who don't get a chance to fulfil possible dreams. I can't remember if I mentioned it before in this thread, but I myself have cancer, and that's what kicked this whole thing off within the last couple years. The problem is money, and that's what took me so long to get to this point. I guess I can say I'm luckier then most in my position.

Any time I hear these tails they are all positive and they always work out fine, the person always ends up better and the old life was always for the birds. Is that because we always try to make the best of what we are? or do the people that fail just not report it? According to this thread 100% success rate on life gambles? really? If that's the case why does this thread even exist? why even worry about taking huge gambles with your life...it seems it always works out for the better.

In the bar, on threads, in the restaurant, at school reunions, I have never once heard anyone say "do you know what I took the gamble and just regret every day of it. If only I realised I was actually living the best of days back then". Maybe its just human nature to always think we are doing better than yesterday.
I look for those negative experiences and failures actually. It helps me at making sure I'm not making the same mistakes or what to look for when it's going the wrong direction. You can find many of these experiences on Quora.

I rarely use a #, but #firstworldproblems

I will say I've been down on my luck for years, as I am now losing eye sight in one of my eyes due to contact usage for 15 years. I'd say having cancer in my 20's and losing my eye sight are pretty unlucky. But hey, I've got my health right 😀 Isn't that what you're supposed to say?

Lucky for me I still have a year's worth of GI bill since I worked extremely hard during my Bachelors and finished quickly. So as long as the business stays afloat, school should be very affordable.

Unsure if people are the type here to purchase these type of products, although luxury watch owners I would guess have the funds to purchase firearms and gear as well 😀
