New Bond watch

The other issue could be Bond moving to a new brand with a new actor / film? Have a feeling Tudor would be that option.

Tudor would be a major faux-pas. However, Bond going back to Rolex would be a welcome comeback both for watch enthusiasts and fans of the franchise. If they're planning a Bond reboot. That's the way to go. Although I don't think Rolex cares all that much about the Bond franchise. It's beneath them at this point.

Yes I doubt Rolex would pay to have their watches placed in a Bond movie. Their place in Bond history is already cemented by the Ian Fleming novels and by being worn by Connery, Lazenby, Moore & Dalton. The only way we'll see a shift away from Omega is if another brand offers stupid money to outbid Omega, or if Broccoli & Wilson simply decide they want a change for whatever reason. Possible, since they went back to Aston Martin after a 3 movie stint with BMW (which also coincided with Omega in GoldenEye), but unlikely I think.

I think you're right. Trying to position themselves as going further up market, I suspect they would view special editions as "beneath them." A nonsense sentiment, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I think the Omega-Bond connection is likely working out very nicely for both Omega and the Eon/Broccoli group. A major manufacturer of several lines, available watches, and lots of marketing oomph has shown it is willing to make special editions and market them well - even making watches in conjunction with their movie star. I just don't see Rolex's careful / staid development team offering that kind of responsiveness just to sell watches that already have a 12 month waiting list. I'm not sure which other company is really in a place to compete with the Swatch Group in the movie tie-in category - even Rolex.

Plus, while watch collectors might like a hark back to the Bond Submariner - it is remarkable to me how so many speakers on Bond podcasts aren't pointing to Dr. No or Goldfinger as their seminal Bond movie - but instead it is Golden Eye. With the 30th anniversary of Golden Eye popping up around the time of a new Bond Release, the logic of continuing the Omega connection looks too strong.

I think this has more to do with the average age of "Bond influencers" on social media these days. In addition, I often get the feeling that the N64 GoldenEye video game is a key reason for the movie's popularity. I've seen many fans say they played that video game over & over, and hence it's a big part of their childhood nostalgia.

The GoldenEye video game is back in the news (announced in a couple weeks ago) because they just announced that it will be remastered and available to play on Switch handhelds and for Xbox as well...

This is me and I’m not ashamed! I was a 90s kid. Probably wore out my VHS tape of GoldenEye and played the N64 game nonstop. Pierce Brosnan was the man and that watch… It’s probably what cemented watches in my mind and of course, Omega. I used to watch the Bond marathons and also have another unpopular opinion. Sean Connery is cool and all but I much prefer the Roger Moore movies.

Is there really anyone who spends >300$ on those things?

It's not as if they're even nice ...

My wife likes them , she has two.
Both were a gift from the OB, most recently when I picked up the NTTD , they popped in the bag for her with their compliments.

For me : I love a watch bracelet - I'm a HUGE fan of the current Seamaster 300m "bond" bracelet and, when I finally bought my white 300M after looking at the watches for years, can't understand the "it doesn't taper" grief for this little bit of engineering mastery...

BUT...I never seem to really wear another bracelet. I think these sail bracelets, including the bond ones, are actually nice. I've thought about getting a blue one for the summer, I just never do. I'd like to be an "other wrist too" bracelet guy, but I just never seem to see anything that makes me think I'd actually wear it..

As a 60th anniversary response....I do think these "bond" sail bracelets are a bit of weak sauce for a company that owes so much of its success to full-on Bond embrace. I was really surprised we didn't see a black 300 heritage with some Dr. No dot motifs on it or some such.

Latest from Omega.

“I wanted to let you know that we have released two sailing bracelets as a nod to the 60th anniversary of James Bond – please see the new products below:

OMEGA Aqua Luxury Bracelet | BA02CW0000203 | OMEGA UK® (omegawatches.com)

OMEGA Aqua Luxury Bracelet | BA02CW0000103 | OMEGA UK® (omegawatches.com)
Seems like a stretch to associate these with the 60th Anniversary. There's nothing on the website or the bracelets to indicate the milestone. According to the website, they're more like accessories for the NTTD and Spectre watches.

Update. Went into Omega Boutique on Friday. Manager told me bracelets were a hint to something coming but he has zero information and is waiting for something to either leak here or with another watch enthusiast blog etc. His prediction was a SM 300 heritage with some sort of historical reference to Dr No. All guesswork of course.

LOL, that's great that the manager is waiting for more information from Omegaforums vs the Omega mothership.

That became not so clear, he called it a "special edition" and suggested to be quick. Sorry, but I really tried to squeeze more out of him. Maybe not as hard as LeChiffre, but hard 😉
