From the photo of your black dial Bulova and also references online, it seems that the Ord Dept watch used a smaller crown than A-17/A-17A. And agree that a large crown really makes a creamy winding; that’s what I have experienced winding my a17a 😀
All of those big crown watches wind like silk- perfect fine ratcheted feedback, lovely even tension until fully wound. I wish all my manual watches felt like these.

Just a quick update on my meeting with the seller. Disappointingly, the watch does not look quite the same as shown in the photos; there is a dark radium burn mark of the shape of the hour hand perfectly covered by the hour hand in the photo (coincidence? I don’t think so); the rest of the burn looks just “Less brown” than the photos (thanks to Lightroom / photoshop). Wasted my lunch hour but great to have learnt some lessons.

Now that you have your antennae out on what to look for, it’s just a matter of time

Yes that is very typical for these types of watches with heavy radium lume. That watch probably sat for years with the hands in a certain position and this burned the dial. IMO you could find a better example minus the heavy radium burn. Good luck 👍
