I am new and looking for some thoughts.. advice as a wife shopping for a super particular and picky husband. I want to surprise him with a new watch and need help to make sure he is wowed! I found a Seamaster ocean planet knock off in his old jewelry box and don’t know if he liked it enough to pull the trigger on an authentic one. I have been comparing the brand against Rolex but my husband is more of the quality and make over a name and resale.. please let me know your thoughts and suggestions.
thank you in advance!

It's a lot to spend on a surprise if you're not sure. Can you think of a way to get some feedback? Does he wear the SM PO knockoff?

Or maybe it would be better just to give up on the surprise part and ask him. My wife bought me a watch once, and she asked me what I wanted. I appreciate it just as much.

Thank you for the suggestion. He does not wear it but it is damaged so that may be part. It is a big deal for him to spend money on anything and I know the knockoff was quite pricey too - more than most might spend on a lower brand dive watch. This tells me that the aesthetic of it was a win for him as well as mechanics. I think the Rolex is too flashy but if I’m spending 9k to your point I really want to make sure this is the right route. The surprise part is important to me since he has to constantly guess on jewelry for me.. but I’m less picky lol. So I guess I’m looking for feedback on quality here ..

It's really a lovely sentiment and I'm sure he will love whatever you get him.

Rolex and Omega both make excellent high-quality watches, I don't think you can go wrong either way. It's a matter of personal preference, in my opinion. This is an Omega enthusiast forum, so you will probably get more votes on the Omega side, but many of us appreciate both brands. Honestly, I don't think that Rolex dive watches are any more flashy than Omega divers. However, it can be difficult to purchase a new Rolex Submariner or Sea Dweller from a dealer, they are often wait-listed.

Take him to a boutique and let him choose. The surprise element here is both superfluous and risky. Have the boutique experience together and he'll get the watch he wants. A high end watch as a surprise gift is at best a gamble. He might surprise you with his choice in a boutique. Plus it's a fantastic experience for you both. Good luck with the purchase. G

That is good to know on the waitlist. As mentioned because he thought enough to get the omega to try before the investment I am pretty certain brand wise I’m in the right direction. Is there a big difference in omega enthusiasts when it comes to seamaster vs speedmaster preference?

I would say they are very different watches. Functionally, one is a dive watch (highly water resistant, rotating bezel, readable dial) and one is a chronograph (stop-watch function, complicated dial with multiple subdials) with a history related to space exploration.

If he's a Bond fan the Seamaster might be of interest. The Speedmaster is generally of interest to those who enjoy the space/NASA connection. Some of us have one or more of each. Dive watches are universally appealing due to their rugged nature. A one and done approach. Most of us here are far from one and done!! G

Very good to know as well. He’s into both areas of interest but I believe a man should have a nice watch and the ruggedness is more appealing I think to both of us. I just think some of the speedmaster models are aesthetically pleasing.

The Speedy (as it's known) is something of a strap monster. That's to say it looks great on a variety of strap or bracelet options and can be dressed up or down as the occasion requires. It's a great one and done watch. Several options buying new and a plethora of vintage options too. If I had to keep only one of my Omega watches it would probably be the one, that said, I'd struggle to part with the Seamasters too. G

This. Took my wife to the Cartier boutique in Manhattan, to “take a look” at that Tank she’d been craving. I’d already decided I was goi g to buy her one, but thought she’d like to pick the exact one she wanted. Definitely made it a more memorable experience than if I had just presented it to her wrapped up.

He might even choose something else other than a Planet Ocean.

I agree with this. Take him "just for fun" to look at Omegas, tell him it's window shopping.

IMHO Safest Bet: SEAMASTER PLANET OCEAN. 600M. 42 MM, Black Dial. STEEL ON STEEL.

Another echo for this route. Making the decision to buy him one there and then can be part of the surprise, and both being there to go through the Boutique experience makes the journey to choosing the right watch all part of the story.

I own two Seamasters and could make a long list of other Seamasters I'd like to buy yet I have no real desire to own a Speedmaster.

We're all different people and I'd second the idea of taking your husband into the boutique and letting him choose.

For a quality one and done the Seamaster aqua-terra range is worth consideration. Also if you follow the link it shows the array of choice for just one offshoot of the Seamaster family. I tend to agree for the level of spend it is best to get some sort of steer on what styles he will like.

Another vote for the shopping outing. I’m a woman so I can safely say this: buying a watch for someone is just as difficult and risky as buying a handbag for a woman. There’s lots of sizes, colors and practical features he might prefer. Also you never know; for that kind of money he might prefer to go on a nice vacation with you which will be super memorable, and get a really nice $250 seiko. And yes those are really cool and good quality.
