Fascinating thread.

1. Value increases exponentially as condition approaches NOS/Unworn. i.e a 100% watch might be worth twice a 97%
2. Premoon Speedmasters are relatively common. $1600/1800 will still get you a head only needing a service.
3. DO90 bezels have risen dramatically and will affect the head only value by as much as $1000 if it is good
4. Wearing a 95% watch will reduce its condition, hence value. If you wear it long enough, it wont matter as value will catch up

The OP's watch is a stunning example and there are not many examples left in the condition of this one. The reason being most all of them were worn and used and abused. If this were bought to be a daily wearer it would end up turning into another average to above average example and then there would be one less pristine example of an already thin market. I guess you would be thinning the herd. 🙁As another forum member always says, " it's better to overpay for a pristine example then to underpay for a bad one" or something along those lines.

Gotcha! Congrats upon graduation! Does the seller have any wiggle room or are they firm at $5000? You could always make an offer.

What offer would you say is legitimate for both parties. I saw someone saw 4250. But honestly this watch looks almost brand new and it seems that everything is original. Ive seen 69. But always theres something replaced usually. With my limited shopping though. So what would you say sir?

Like was said earlier, I would want to see pictures of the movement and inside of the case back to confirm the model # and serial # and cal. Also ask about the service history. If it hasn't had a service in years, that is going to cost you more money since you plan on wearing it. If everything checks out, I would start with an offer you feel will not offend the owner south of $5000 and let them know that if it had the box and papers your offer would be better. In the end, only you can decide what you want to pay for it.

If you want an almost new -69 then take it. As already mentioned the bracelet (from 3/70) alone is 1000.- and the DON-bezel 1500.--.
I would just ensure that (as other mentioned) the serial no and caseback enwritings are ok.

There are roughly no bargain watches on the market anymore. Too many of us are scanning the markets after them....
Maybe it's too expensive.... but not much - maybe a couple of hundreds..... but what ist that? You do not have much choice it that condition.
This is a watch that will keep it's value (or it's value will even rise over the years) when NOT worn.

If you want to wear it then I would do this only safely and occasionally.
As a daily beater it will loose value over time - but still then. I am sure it will keep it's value at 3-4 K. So there would be a loss of 1-2 K. But with every NEW watch you buy at a AD you will loose MORE money after you bought it.

I was looking for the link to those NOS 69s and couldn't find them. I seem to recall that the last one had a DNN bezel which is an important distinction.
Both were 69's with DoN. One by Stef and one a private seller.

If you can afford 5000 and want to wear the watch every day then I would go for it. Take care of the watch as I am sure you will, enjoy it and live your life.

Personally I buy watches to wear but everyone has their own opinion about that.

I think the watch looks stunning and well worth 5k in my opinion.

If you reverse search the image (tineye) then you can find the original ad for this watch for those interested. I woudl buy it at $5000 but don't want to risk the UK import duty & tax

Hello Noles_88 and welcome to the forum.

Subject to seeing pics of the movement and inside case back my opinion is buy it. You may have to wait a long time for another to come along in this condition and by then prices will have gone up anyway.

It sounds like you have your heart set on it and are willing to pay the $5000 but want to be sure you are not over paying.

Personally I would always pay a premium for a watch in this condition.

You say this will be a long term watch so let's assume you pay $500 over the going rate. Over 10 years this equates to $50 per year and over 20 years $25 per year. A few cups of coffee per year.

As the guys at Rolls Royce use to say .........."The quality remains long after the price has been forgotten".

Looking forward to seeing some more pics of your new watch.

Regards, Jack

Wow, after reading all the replies it kind of scares me to wear my speedy 145022-68st. I have had this watch since new but being young and dumb I don't have the box nor the paper work and I wore the watch for maybe a year and then stuffed it in the drawer until last year. After listening to all you fine people I sent it out to have it serviced and have worn it three times and it's back in my drawer. I know a lot of you said just wear it and enjoy it because it is a pre moon watch and that the value is not like the 321 cal. My 1039 bracelet is missing a link so I know how fragile they are so I got the 1171 to put on it. I guess I've had it since new and I don't know why after reading all this I'm afraid to wear it. Maybe if the wife and I go someplace fancy I'll wear it. If you like that watch I'd go for it.

Vintage watches is like vintage cars. Some people buy them as trailer queens while some buy them for track days 😀 if you buy it to wear it (track day) buy a nice watch that looks good and feel good on your wrist and you enjoy looking at, then wear it in good health. Don't worry about depreciation and damage since you are not thinking of flipping it in a year. If you are watch collecting (trailer queen) then you need to buy low, put it in a safe to sell high later. Which ever way it is your choice, no right or wrong way

You guys are scaring me a bit too! I got this 105.012 and the bezel and 1506/16 bracelet/end-link are both, while not NOS, in pretty great shape. I might have to wear it with a strap and service bezel just to keep the value steady.
