That’s because no one can pull off a watch that doesn’t have has wearability as a design goal.

glad that OP is happy, but cmon

emperor’s new clothes…

Being in Titanium and without spring bars makes it a very rugged kind of watch to wear with the nato strap configured right it wouldn't be lost to the deep accidently.
It would be a serious professional kind of watch or great as a sailing or fishing watch.
But I can't help but wonder why they couldn't have made it 2-3 mm thinner👎
Maybe they aren't all that interested in selling many and it mainly exists as a technical show piece which will linger in boutiques on prominent display sitting all in it's own display case in the middle of the floor with some added visuals around it. In which case I suppose they have achieved their objective and it will get people talking about the brand more👍
The boutiques will be able to sell plenty of divers watches off it, but only the die-hard divers watch fanatics will seriously consider it.
But in Titanium and on a nato, it sort of makes sense👍

There was probably some marketing research and reasons involved in the decision on 6KM depth rating and the thickness. 10x the rating of a 600M PO, highest rating for an automatic, hitting what appears to be the thickest watch consumers will still buy, etc.

I'd bet that the next step for Omega would be to incorporate all the tech from the UD into a normal 600M PO that is thinner and has no HEV.

Given what the other brands are offering it may be not that easy to achieve:
- The Deepsea is less than 1mm thinner than the UD, for 2/3 of the depth rating.
- The ZRC Grand Fond 3000 is a tad thicker than the UD, with only 1/2 of the depth rating, but claiming 'tested at 5000m' (in that case Omega could claim 'tested at 7500m' as ISO 6425 requires the watch to be tested 2h at 125% of the rated water pressure)

The only way reasonable way to make it 2-3mm thinner would be a manual watch

Congratulations 👍 Loved that in the flesh. An absolute beauty. Wears like a dream (mind the door edges though).

Now all we need is some of those funny watch meme dudes to make a Deep meme …

This makes sense but I also wonder why they made it out of Titanium if it doesn't equate to making a thinner watch👎

Is there a ratio between thickness and watch diameter that's optimal. Take an egg for example. If we squeeze it on the side it will break, but squeezing it on end will require more pressure to break it.
Where a perfect sphere would be the ultimate👍

Perhaps they reached the physical limit on the thickness to diameter ratio at the rated depth With the Titanium?👎
Or was the limitation with the Stainless Steel references, but they had to replicate it in Titanium for marketing purposes.

After a lifetime of practice dodging annoying pedestrians in NYC, doorjambs are not a concern 😁
I think the only time I smacked a watch against something was when i was going around a corner in the office. Luckily it was my GSotM so it came out unscathed.

Wearability was definitely a goal or else they would've just released the original Ultra Deep as is but sure, its likely a tertiary goal at most for this watch.

Its definitely too big for many people to wear at all. And for me I would never wear it with any outfit that isn't casual. Luckily I wear jeans and a t-shirt for work 90% of the time so this watch will get plenty of use.

That fairytale reference doesnt really apply here though, I don't think anyone is disillusioned about the massive size of this watch and how niche it is.

Its a good, plain, high quality strap. In a perfect world, Omega would have thought of a solution like this so we could have the full OEM look (brushed titanium hardware and matching blue accent) while avoiding the extra 2mm of thickness.

One thing to note though, I don't think this strap was intended to be worn this way. Its 29cm long (typical of most NATOs) so when looped the way I have it, it is just enough for my 7" wrist. Maybe a 7.25" wrist would fit. If you have a larger wrist, I'd email them and see if custom lengths can be made.

Sorry
The reference was about others saying how nice it it is, looks great, when I’m saying no one can pull it off and it doesn’t look all that different on you vs your girlfriend (simply because the watch is so huge, NOT because of you)

but I see now more clearly that’s just my opinion, and probably comes off as more mean-spirited than anything else and I should just shut up if I can’t say something nice.

My apologies.

Funny.
I was looking at the pics and thought the watch looked better on his lady👎
I don't know why, but there you go.
I reckon she'll appropriate that one in a heartbeat if she thinks it's a goer😉

It's a big watch, there is no way getting around that. How it wears is a function of design and the individual's wrist (size and shape). That strap looks bulky to me, but I don't like NATOs for that reason. Wear it in good health. And it better not mist up after washing your hands, or going in/out of a/c buildings, or going in the shallow end of the pool.

Limiting factor is the crystal, not the case. Almost all of the extra thickness compared to a regular PO can be traced to the 5.2mm crystal (vs 3.4mm on the PO). To shave off 2-3mm they would need to make the rest of the watch much thinner than a PO, for ten times the depth rating.

Ah no worries, i was more so just confused on the reference lol.

I agree that its definitely a very niche product that wont appeal or be suitable for most people. Its definitely not something I would recommend to someone just getting into watches.

Lmao, I will never share this with her, or she really will steal my watch.

Yea I don't like how bulky the NATO is. But I did pull it one notch tighter to help with that. It was uncomfortable at first but quickly molded itself to sit closer to the watch to compensate.

Either way, this is why I'm looking at alternatives. Gonna try the Zuludiver Octopod system and Nick Mankey Designs hook strap next.

No sign of the steel version yet?

The NYC 5th Ave boutique said they received a SS black on bracelet UD the same time as the Ti one I bought. So there is one out there... probably just bought by someone who doesnt frequent the online watch community.

That is one serious bezel!

It has really grown on me. I originally preferred the orange bezel on the SS model, largely because it also was lumed.
But this bezel is really beautiful with the brushed finished and the liquid metal markings.

My local OB has both the TI and SS version. I got to check it out this past weekend. Way too big for my wrist but had to see these awesome dive watches in person. Here are some pics compared to my Gen 3 X33. I gotta say the rubber strap on the stainless version is super comfortable!
