Bought this nice Mido on a whim. Anyone know anything about it?

Your knowledge greatly appreciated.

Lovely looking Mido Ocean Star, most likely around 1960-63, may have the star in the back which is always a plus. Movement is Eta based. They are fabulous watches.
Make sure your watchmaker knows how to take these apart. They require a crystal lift and the crown be rotated so Mido reads horizontally (like on lined rules), then the movement tips out. It is not a split stem that you pull out.
Second track is on the rehaut which is inside the inner rim of the crystal (these crystals are proprietary and long NLA so be careful) so reassembly requires that the pips and hash marks be perfectly aligned when the crystal lift releases- which is not easy as they tend to creep a little- so may take a few tries. If the pips aren’t realigned properly- they will look crooked.

That looks like a really nice example from that one angle. Nice find, and a great example of brands that provide a lot of watch for the money.

Thanks for the knowledge points. Saw it on EBay and immediately made an offer. From the pics, it looked good at all angles. Hoping my watchmaker can service.

Thanks for sharing. Not sure what you mean by NLA? No Longer Available? Thanks in advance. Paid $345 for the watch with little info other than runs great and keeps good time , from a seller with no ratings - risky, but the condition looked great.

Agreed. I have had 2 of them but have given them as gifts to friends who were smitten by them. They are incredibly sleek with the short lugs and tucked crown. Total class+ sport and timeless.

NLA=No Longer Available. The rehaut is also the tension ring for the crystal. The pips are radium on these early ones. I have found these crystals on eBay in the factory packaging but they are very specific for size so if you break it, you need to measure the old one to get the correct replacement. They will be marked on the package with size, state radium, and say white(silver), black or gold rehaut. The crystal is also signed in the middle (you can see it under the crystal with a loupe).
The movement is made by ETA so any watchmaker can service them and parts are abundant. The movement will be marked Mido, but it is an Eta reference and will be stamped under the balance. If he says he can’t get parts for it- find another watchmaker.
Just making sure he knows how to get it out (mention the crown position) and it’s easy. I would also ask if he could just measure the crystal for you- even though it is fine, and see if you can grab a spare on eBay when they do pop up. I try to have spares for all of my favorite watches that aren’t available anymore. I haunt eBay looking for spare parts while I have my morning coffee and have saved searches.
Enjoy!

Again, thanks, you’ve been very helpful. I feel that my local watchmaker is pretty good, and I’ll give him your advice. Do you think $345 was a fair price?

$345 is a little higher than they used to be when I was hunting them, but they are not commonly this clean. If it’s running currently, I think you got a nice watch, in a classic style, by a legendary company for little money.
All in with a service, you would hard pressed to find anything like this for anywhere near the money.

Nice watch! I think Mido has some great models, but seems to be one of those brands that never gets much attention.

As some of us prefer it. 😉

After some postal mishaps, finally received the watch. Fantastic physical condition. Appears to be the AS 1678 movement with quickset between 20 and 24. Am I right that this movement doesn’t have manual winding?
