Just recently gotten into watching the series and was wondering if anyone has any of them.

Particularly more interested in the Seamaster, and Memovox, but I believe the Memovox has some controversial issues about it being a replaced disk.

Although @Rman jests, I believe the Seamester from Madmen is a fantasy watch. I too wanted one, but was informed via this forum that the configuration of a black dialed Deville with a cross-hair dial was not actually a factory option and the watch used in the show is a redial, and those sold on the open market are also redials to look like the watch on the show (experts, please correct me if I am wrong).
That said, if you have no issue with a redialed watch, then there may indeed be a member here who has one to sell.

Also, a tuxedo dialed Tudor was worn by Roger, and I think I recall Don wearing a black dialed Oyster cased Rolex at some point, Airking, DJ or OPD- can't remember.

Best of luck on your hunt.

I actually put quite some research into the black crosshairs SMDV, for exactly the same reasons. Don Draper is not without his faults in his private life, but as a professional he excelled in my view. As I was entering the professional ranks ~7 years back, I wanted a watch that would remind me of being a professional irrespective of any private-life shenanigans.

Based on what I found, it seems unlikely for the watch to have existed in real life. The one expert I consulted who did in fact believe it to have existed, however, was none other than Eric Wind...

FYI: the SMDV that Jon Hamm wore on the show was auctioned at Christies for close to $12k. How you like that for a re-dial?

Pete Campbell sports a 50s Hamilton Sputnik IIRC in one of the episodes. Pretty cool mid-century watch that can be found for less than $500.

He wears an Explorer in a few episodes. You cannot go wrong with that!

Aren't you actually selling a "fantastic" vintage Hamilton in the private sale section? Pretty cool watches indeed 😉

This image was of hot debate (not sure he wore that watch on the show, it may have just been a promo- shot) because it looks to be a 14270 and not a 1016 Explorer which is what was available at the time- product placement perhaps- but not historically correct. The producers of the show paid so much attention to detail (I saw a documentary on it) that something this blatant wouldn't have been overlooked, so it is very intentional.

Yes, it looks like a 14270. No lug holes:

And flat crystal- the 1016 was the last domed crystal Rolex made to my knowledge through the end of the run into the 80's.

Derek Dier (Watchestobuy) who consigned that watch to Christie’s made a second watch for the show to use as a backup(had the dial made to match the first), the second watch went to the Smithsonian collection.

Perhaps he would make one for the OP?

Maybe it’s worth an ask Kent.

As an aside, I saw January Jones in a supermarket last month, it’s the second time I’ve run into her, the first was sitting next to me at an airport in another city.
Third time’s a charm?

Ahh I had to admit, I did not really do my research on this part. A redial would be a deal breaker for me unfortunately.

This would be interesting just for the fun of it.

Strange but true, she has the same birth date as me!

All of that said about the redialed SMDV, there were black dialed references from this time period, but they fetch a premium over their silver dialed versions.
And if you want a watch that although is not historically correct but was used in the show and is a stunner- the Rolex 14270 is a beautiful watch and they can be had “reasonably”.

Agreed, I might just get a black SMDV that has the same case to get it as close as possible.

The Rolex 14270 is excellent, however I do own the 1016 already, but one to consider.

Best of luck on the hunt for your black Seamaster- be very skeptical and scritinize them carefully- lots of redials, some very good.

I assume they didn’t use the 1016 in the show becuuse it’s a bit too rugged looking for Don’s polish- the 14270 is sleeker and more elegant. But why they didn’t use a black DJ, Airking or OPD of the period is beyond me...would have suited his character well and been period correct.

Thanks, will do. Appreciate the help and thoughts.
