My advice is to increase your budget.

I think with vintage watches, you want to be buying the best watches possible (within reason).

They will be in better condition and will hold their value better.

Welcome, @butters. Nice to see another Vancouverite on OF. I concur with all the ‘be patient and learn’ advice offered here. Note: keep a lookout for Private Sales by @Vanallard. He’s in New Westminster and will often post some nice pieces on CL Vancouver as well.

To be totally honest, if my budget was 500 CAD, I would not be looking at Omega. The available vintage Omega watches in that price range are not compelling to me. I would be looking at other brands.

Solid 35mm piece. Keep in mind you will have to buy a strap.

Your call if you can live with the patina on the dial for 500.

I offered the watch to OP for ~$450 USD, which includes a new leather strap that is pictured in the photos that were subsequently added to the listing.

I’ll extend this offer to other members.

That’s a very nice offer and for a classic that’s serviced and ready to roll-hard to beat.

That awesome of you. Please don’t think I was disparaging the price or the watch. Just noting the patina on the dial which for some people is a no go.

Pro tip...
Focus on the watch not the background. Can’t tell from that shot as it is not in focus.

Serial number beginning 120xxxx dates to ca 1950.

Lots of wear on the back of the lugs and very serious doubt as to the originality of the dial.

Keep looking.

Hey there! As someone who’s from Vancouver island I can say the watch community here is extremely small, which really sucks for us.. However that doesn’t mean you can’t find cool things.

Everyone’s advice here is quite accurate; at $500 CAD you might want to stay away from Omega. Not only do you risk a redial, but a movement that needs servicing would kill you. I remember buying my neo-vintage Moonwatch after selling my perfectly good Speedmaster reduced and did not account for servicing budget.. Rookie mistake!

If you can up the budget a bit there’s a few Seamaster bumpers from Seattle with some patina on the dial in the private sales section I’ve been looking at myself! You’d be wise to snap one of those up if it’s in the budget. And who knows... If you do a F2F meetup maybe they’ll cut you a deal

For more personal advice, I’d say buy exactly what you want the first time, you’ll laugh in the long run. I should have done that with a lot of my watches.. And now I sit on a few too many to wear and need to sell some!

Happy searching

There was an issue with PMs not working, so I will post that msg to you here. There is a nice looking '61 Girard Perregaux on craigslist. It isn't my style (I don't like date windows, go figure), but it seems solid. The price has been dropping to now $500 CDN. Seller is located quite close to West Point Grey Time (http://www.westpointgreytime.com/) where you could meet the seller and get it appraised. I would be surprised if he didn't take $475 or $450 at this point, esp if the watchmaker says that this and that are needed for service. GPs are solid and innovative watches. Something to consider. https://vancouver.craigslist.org/van/jwl/d/vancouver-1961-girard-perregaux-watch/6938070098.html A lot of good ideas on this thread already, so no need to reply.

Ooops edited to include photos

Here is a better picture of the black dial omega, does the "A" look refinished and the logo looks off? Can't tell on the other marks on the dial
