Yea I saw that, but its out of my budget.. 馃檨, along with the need to service it. The gold dust looks so nice too.
I'm not trying to hard sell, but this is as good as you will probably every find for under $1k with an original black dial. Stretch it, beg borrow or steal. If you really want a REAL black dialed Omega- figure out how to get this one.

Oh I like that one! I bought one like this but not as nice. I was planning on starting a thread to show it and let you all tell me why I should have waited for one like this. Sometimes we get excited and just don鈥檛 want to wait... the Internet makes it so easy!
Interested in seeing!

...and put in in a nice watch box and just look at it for a year until funds are available for service.

Beware of black dials, they are very rare and 99% of what you see on the web are redials.

Buy this one now- I am not joking, you won't find better example of a black dial for the price, nor a more reputable seller.

Wow if you can this would be a good move. TBH if my life hadn鈥檛 suddenly went in the crapper over the last couple months I would probably pick it up myself. Another gentlemen mentioned a dynamic, check it out they are quite unique. Really nice dial. Anyway good luck and your asking around here which is wise.

Just curious, when did Omega stop using radium? Curious because of an article I read from last year in regards to having radium watches confined in a room should be alarming.

Around 1963, and it鈥檚 not enough to hurt you. Just don鈥檛 lick your dial
I鈥檝e been wearing radium lumed watches for 30 years, and aside of the hair loss, impotency, skin cancer and blindness, I don鈥檛 known why everyone gets so concerned 馃お
Seriously, it鈥檚 far less of a concern than lead paint and asbestos which is in every house built prior to 1970

You are right at the lowest end for something of any quality. A possible option is a 60s Geneve. They don't have the high-end case finishing of the Seamaster range but they are still a superior watch and the automatics have the excellent 552 (no date) or 565 (date) movements. A decent one is just about possible for $400 but servicing will be extra. If you want a manual wind, a Geneve with the 601 or 611 movements is of equal quality and will cost less. You'll be lucky to get the magic word Seamaster on the dial for your budget.

Here's a 552 to give you an idea.

I have the gold version of this for sale in private watch forums.

I was in a similar situation earlier this year. Best advice is to take your time. You're lucky that you want a smallish size because that's where the lowest prices are.

Read the stickies and when you find a watch you think you want to buy, post a thread with a link to the deal and ask for advice. Be sure to post photos or @efauser will remind you to do so. Chances are that significant flaws will be pointed out to you and you'll be glad you asked somebody before you spent your money. With the budget you mentioned you only get one shot at this. Don't rush it.

For that money you could probably pick up a half decent Seamaster bumper calendar, they seem to sell quite low from time to time.

I've found out that this is usually because the movement is worn out.

Well, finally, my first post.
Hope it isn't poor form to jump onto this thread to introduce myself...

After the recommendations here I've offered to buy this and will cross my fingers as a newcomer.
https://omegaforums.net/threads/red...ega-seamaster-automatic-reference-2846.98734/

I've been quietly around for months soaking up the advice about speedmasters etc as I'm after one that I can wear for years to come, with little of value to say.

My only watch at the moment (apart from a digital gshock I wear when sports balls are flying around at 80mph; it does its job) is a quartz I love - the A-13A pilot watch - and the main reason I love it is the love that went into designing it in the first place.
Have a great week,
Tom

From my past mistake, it is always better to wait until your budget allows you to get what you want and not end up with something that you will move on very soon. Search model you like, what quality you will accept then browse here to learn about those watch and fair market value.

Welcome Tom,
If you do indeed get that lovely Seamaster from Norman, you will realize very quickly that you not only got a very rare watch, but bought from one of the best. Hope you get it.

As Standy mentioned, stay on OF and read a lot. You need knowledge to keep from getting ripped off or make poor decisions. $500 is probably light for a nice piece, esp from a dealer. There is too much disposable income in Vancouver to keep prices in check. If you can, spend the year learning and buy next year with a bigger budget.

Vancouver has slim pickings for a vintage watch scene:
- be careful at the flea market and J & M coin. Depending on your tolerance for risk and your knowledge as a collector, I would bring my camera and a notebook, and practice buying in your head (do not make hollow offers) but leave my wallet at home
- take a trip to http://www.ottofriedlwatchservice.com/, and you can then try on some real vintage pieces so you can better learn what is real and what is fantasy
- same with West Point Grey Time, they have a modest selection of honest vintage. Don鈥檛 judge them by their low-end website http://www.westpointgreytime.com/
- either of the above can be your watchmaker. Same with the German Watchmaker in Yaletown, but he doesn鈥檛 have pieces to sell. Great rep for repair though
- the Kerrisdale antique fair is in a few weeks, better pickings there than the flea market. Just be sure to go on Sunday, I am going Saturday and don鈥檛 want you to scoop me 馃槈

Break over, back to work...

So good to know there were members from vancity! Going to pin your advice for when I return back home.

I'd have bought that one if I wasn't in Europe. And I've only been after Connies for months now.

I have been looking at the 50s to 60 Constellations, Seamasters, as well as the the ones with just the Omega Automatic marking on the dials. Wouldn't mind the 70s as well.

I would prefer a blue or black face dial as I like their patina, but other finishes are nice as well as long as the patina doesn't look damaged in my perspective. Haven't really considered other brands nor newer watches. Also got a preference for leather straps as it would be a daily.
One just popped up in the sales forum.

Thank you, and that's very reassuring... I'm keen to find out more if you can point me in the right direction to read up on it?
It's looking very encouraging; and I'm beginning to feel an unexpected 'It is mine, I tell you. My own, my precious' vibe.

Looking to purchase my first vintage Omega watch, any recommendations for a budget of around $500 CAD ($400 USD). Interested in picking up locally as well if you are located in Vancouver!

Been browsing around eBay and the forums, but they were either hard to identify for an all original, unrefinished watch, or the price was out of my range.

Help is appreciated! Thank you.

Not sure I can provide a proper recommendation to you for your first watch, however I hope what ever you do pull the trigger on, you love just as much as I love your avatar. 馃憤
