Looking for advice on a trade.

2019 has been a very content year for me in terms of watch collecting. So content that I rarely look at the for sale section here on OF or anywhere for that matter. Being a collector I always have a couple of watches on my wish list, but I haven’t been actively pursuing, because I’m completely satisfied with the state of my rotation.. But recently one of those watches on my list, the Nautilus 5990 came up for sale at a really good price.

Now the dilemma is I have a few watches I could use as a trade for the Patek. Watches at one point in time I considered grails, but if I’m being honest don’t get the wrist time they deserve. The first that fits this category is the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy and the other being the Patek 5164. I wear the 5164 more for nicer family moments and I haven’t figured out why Snoopy gets little wrist, because I absolutely love both watches.

I would also have to add my Rolex Daytona 116500 to the deal. I do wear this watch a lot but feel if I miss it down the road, I could add it back to the collection at retail. Not an option with the other two.

What you make this trade? All opinions are welcomed and appreciated.

Your watches are out of my league but trades aren’t. If u can get something you would love for some watches you aren’t crazy about now I say do it. I just made a trade, it was a little difficult but best watch move I’ve made in a while. Good luck on whatever you choose you are trading heavy artillery

It’s all part of the fun. The opportunity may not come around again and you may regret it

You didn’t specify if the 5990 was full set, condition? The 5164 - a or r, condition, full set?

If you wear the Daytona a lot, I'm not sure you should include it in the trade. The gray market price for those is almost 2x MSRP.

I would trade the 5164 or the Silver Snoopy if you don't wear them often. If you miss them after a while you can get them again. I would keep the Daytona if you wear it a lot.👍

Don’t even think about letting the Daytona go if you enjoy wearing it- you won’t get another for a while and if you do it will be more than the value of your trade. If you don’t wear it, then it’s just a dust collector.

The 5990 is a 2018 full set in pristine condition. My 5164 is the “A” type and all watches part of trade are full sets.

The funny thing is, the dealer is giving me almost twice the MSRP for a trade in on the Daytona. Where I’m taking the haircut is on the 5164.

I’ve zero input on what watches you wear and like/love - these are always personal choices. My comment is purely about the economics. The 5990 trades (wholesale) between $85-$90k. The 5164a between $55-$60k. The 11650 between $21-$24 (black dial at the lower range). You can do the math on the Snoopy - don’t know the wholesale market for that watch. Purely on the numbers - a reasonable trade. These are all modern watches and replaceable with a plus/minus on the numbers. I’d have a completely different answer for vintage watches in this $ range.

My thinking is completely in line with this on the economic side of the house.
