Longines ultra quartz help needed

Good luck with it Phil. It's certainly worth having a chat with Longines. If you really like the style and the quirkiness of it maybe get yourself a Longines Ultronic, some have a very similar feel and look to your watch and the super smooth sweep seconds hand on some models goes under the hour markers as yours does. No buzzing noise but a gentle humming instead.

Thanks Chris for the lead. It sounds the exact problem I have. I will join that forum and ask a few questions.
Thanks again

I would go direct to the watchmaker first, in light of some of your earlier comments, TZ-UK can be a funny old forum sometimes, in my opinion. The wider TZ forum wasn't able to find a solution in the earlier case.

Yes I changed my mind after flitting through a few topics. I clearly am not a watchmaker and the general feeling was its an intolerant place.
I fact a similar feeling to my email exchange with electric watches.

Bit more detail on both watches.
Can anyone tell me the movement on the first please.
I've looked at pictures on the Web of 12.68z it it looks mighty similar, the serial number suggests 1951?
The dial I've inspected very closely and I can see inconsistencies especially with the hour markers and the outer track.
All said and done I love it and it keeps very good timing indeed.
The second is the movement on the ultra quartz.

Why do it if it makes you sad?
Do you need the cash?
There’s one more avenue, which is to try and find if the part that keeps failing on all of those examples can be engineered.
Antoine, member of the Military Watch Ressource Forum, has been able to get a company to engineer and manufacture rare parts for the restoration of certain watches.
For sure it may be quite expensive - but maybe you could share the cost with other Ultra Quartz owners who are interested in the venture.
It’s a bit of a project though.

Don't sell yr watch if you don't want to. Here is mine a so called helpless watch. It's my grandfathers' so I need to find a way to fix it. One day I will. The ultra quartz you have is nice, I wish you well and thank you for posting. Don't give up!

Fortunately money isn't one of my problems.
It's more like a character fault. I can't bear dead or dying plants / flowers in the house, it upsets me more than it should.
Having refound this watch and come across a brick wall trying to get it repaired, is causing sleepless nights. Stupid and irrational I know but it's the way I am, much to my wife's annoyance.
If time allows I would like to be part of that project, but I am not a watchmaker in fact I know next to nothing and wouldn't know where to begin.
On separate issue is the other one a 12.68z?
Best regards
Phil

Hello, Phil,
Regarding the movement reference on the other one, have you looked under the balance wheel with a magnifier for it? It's usually stamped there on Longines. Good luck!

Yes, the caliber is 12.68Z. The reference number is 4858, as per the case-back. The approximate date of original invoice is 1953. Based on the "Swiss Made" marking on the movement, the watch was probably intended for the UK market.

Just heard back from longines on the ultra quartz.
1st email gave dates and basic information, movement etc. So it's a 1970 caliber 6512.
I then asked if there's anything they could do to help me get it working again.
They responded by saying that they only guarantee to have parts 15yrs after the model is discontinued.
But they may have parts available depending on the condition its in. So please send it to us for evaluation.
Well at least its not a flat no. So I am very slightly happy.
Cheers all
Phil

Well Xmas may have come early to the fled household 😀
Longines have come back to me after diagnosing my watch, and recommended they undertake a full service, IF parts are needed, these will be refurbished parts.
The work will restore it to full manufacturer's specifications.
The work will take upto 8 weeks, and once completed will be warrenteed for 24 months.
All of this for a ridiculous price.
Still can't believe it.

may I ask what is the ridiculous price? Rediculously high or low?

Considerably less than the silly offers I've had since starting this thread.
