I bought my 'new' car in 2004. The previous new car was in 1990. I have a job that puts me in front of clients, contractors, etc. a lot, and I have no problem pulling up in a 20 year old Ford Escort station wagon with faded paint. The car, clothes, etc. do not make the person, they just may help others form an initial image the person may or may not be able to actually back up. I prefer watches for checking the time more then I prefer using a cellphone, as it's a lot easier to quickly check my wrist then to pull out my phone. It is also less distracting to others if I am in a meeting or with a group of people.

I have some friends who are into watches. They range from 'look at me!" to one who collects things a lot more obscure them Omegas, and the general public will never realize how expensive they are. To him, it is more an appreciation of handmade mechanical items, even if everyone else in the room assumes it is a $30 Timex.

As with probably every BBS out there, OF is populated by a cross-section of humanity. In my short time here I have definitely seen a few 'look at me' types, but they become almost comical when their collections pale in comparison to those of many of the humble collectors who form the core of OF.

It's really a degree deeper than that. "Let's name it something that popularly closely resembles shit."

Their new web store is actually called:
"Shit from Shinola"

And people are buying it.

Just kidding.

I was trying to illustrate another form of pretense.

An attempt to make something that is not the case appear true.

It struck me as entirely credible.

Its hard to be overly pretentious on a forum that started in Australia, where @Trev lives on the Gold Coast if you see a man wearing a suit and tie in public you actually get a little uneasy as he's either a criminal with a court appearance that day, or an undercover policeman.

Even in Brisbane's CBD its pretty rare to see people getting around with their top button done up unless they work for a company that enforces a dress code like a bank. Even when I worked in finance in the city my daily attire was typically a polo shirt, jeans and some Nike AF1s or AM90s.

The most pretentious person we've had in recent memory was a certain Austrian backyard watch dealer planning on becoming the next Bob Maron by selling partially repaired Omegas with more grime in them than the Titanic.

For one, boasting about Zenith gets a blank stare from darn near everyone on the planet.

True story. I had never heard of Zenith as a watch brand until exposed to it here on the Forum. It didn't take long for me to gain an appreciation for Zenith -- especially for their chronographs -- simply by witnessing the enthusiasm demonstrated by Forum members. Mrs. Jones and I were walking through a newly-opened shopping centre recently and I happened to notice through the front window of a jewelry store that there was a Zenith watch display inside. I grabbed my wife by the hand and pulled her with some urgency, through the front door and directly to the Zenith display. There was a decent selection of watch models, including a couple of El Primero variants. I asked to try on one of the El Primeros and when it was on my wrist my wife said: "It's kind of ugly, and doesn't Zenith make crappy televisions, too?"

Thought this might guide the discussion...

pretentious

adjective
  1. attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed.

I am very pretentious. I want alligator to be alligator. Not embossed calfskin. Guess it makes me a douche.

See I'm the opposite, I always get annoyed with gator as the sort of scales of the gator skin form creases that make the band sort of segment into straight bits joined by angles instead of wrapping around your wrist more nicely like calf-gator. Maybe I'm just unlucky with gators 馃檨

I think wearing Omegas these days, or at least the direction that Omega is pushing the brand, as well as any luxury watch is that of pretentiousness. Example in a Bond movie:

When I wear my speedy, I get a bit more attention than I like as it is an instantly recognizable watch. Subconsciously I think that it's reason that I bought the watch. After experiencing a few folks talking about it, I more prefer watches that fly under the radar, like my seikos for work.

I see more snobbish attitude in Rolex forums then in here... WUS and here at OF, everyone really seems to appreciate watches in general. I have never seen anyone out someone else down for wearing a particular brand. It's partly why I love this group and people here.

I look down on anyone shorter than 6 ft - and also those not owning a Enicar.
