Maybe it is just the area that I live and play in, but I have never been directly complimented on any of my watches. I have however, started many conversations with strangers about the vintage Omega on their wrist and then shared what's on mine. I enjoy OF's namesake brand because it has a quality that I can continue to appreciate and a style that it not "trendy"(vintage).

Last month a friend mentioned at a group event that I enjoy watches, several men later began conversation about how they collect Invictas and really enjoy the look and feel. Do I like Invictas? Not particularly, but I'm just happy to see men wearing a watch and enjoying doing so.

I think the only pretense this hobby can have is what you bring to it, now if we are talking about the stereotype the general public has about dummies like us......

I didn't want to influence the discussion more than I already did in the title. I will share my thoughts tomorrow.

Wait a minute... Is this comment meant to be an example of the subject at hand?

I will have the last laugh when you guys are putting on shoes and socks tomorrow.

So which vintage watch will I wear with brown thongs (flip flops) tomorrow.

I like wearing a watch because it makes me think I'm cool. Then I look at my car and think my watch is worth $2k more than my vehicle. I must be a retard

I'm glad you cleared up your definition of thong. I don't like thinking of any of you guys in thongs, much less brown ones.

Well, being all new to this, I have found a friendly atmosphere here, with lots of good advice. I am actually surprised people are so laid-back about their watches. Those of you who own $25K timepieces aren't rubbing it in our lower-endowed (talking about watches here, mind you) enthusiasts' face, and I like it a lot.

One of my other hobbies is a certain brand of premium sports cars, with my interest leaning towards their vintage vehicles. On the main forum I visit about that brand, there is a "The Watch Thread" - now the folks there are so pompous I've just stopped visiting this part of the forum, especially (sorry to single out a specific group here) the Rollies lovers and (rolling eyes) "Paneristi", who pretty much dismiss every other brand except the most extreme ones (think Patek, Lange, Breguet, and the odd Richard Mille...).

I'm happy this place is much different. Whether you own a $600 1960's Seamaster or the Ultimate $25K Speedmaster 馃榾

My only "pretentiousness" as far as watches goes is that I don't want to deal (at least not in the foreseeable future) with cheap brands that are regarded as cheap/crap. I'm talking about 20-30$ stuff.

Oh and, if it's quartz, it better be a solid quality one. 馃榾 And I also don't like metallic watchbands.

That's not called "pretentiousness" but "taste".

I'm over 50 years old and could give a rat's rectum what someone thinks of my watch, my bald head, my gun, my Jeep or my cowboy boots and jeans. What I do care about is my family and that I treat people well no matter their status in life. 馃槈

i did sign up to WUS but I don t really like it so much, the page is too busy. I am dyslexic and trying to wade through so many thread options hurts my head.

I'm not (as far as I know) and their pages hurt my head too....

I just can't see @MMMD or @LouS boasting to patients about their new caliber 135 or turtle. 馃槣

For one, boasting about Zenith gets a blank stare from darn near everyone on the planet. For two, watch-spotting is a fun thing I do to help get me through the day. When someone's wristwear has watch-cred, I might strike up a short conversation, and over the years, I have sussed out a few principles to predict who will give me a blank stare (pretentious) or a good conversation (a real enthusiast).

Vintage anything is a virtually infallible predictor of a good conversation. IN the past few months, I've had good conversations over a Breguet Type XX (vintage), an early GMT-Master (he locked on to my A386), a Constellation (family heirloom), a Datejust (family heirloom) and a straight-lug Speedy. My favorites are a couple of regulars, one of whom is into Bulova, and another who collects vintage Cartier tank watches - opposite ends of the spectrum, but they each teach me stuff every time we talk, or show me something I've never seen before.

Modern anything is usually a predictor of a stuffed shirt (there are always exceptions). IWC and Panerai are the worst. Patek can go either way. Rolex favors stuffed shirt (Yachtmaster>Sub>Daytona>GMT Master), but more enthusiasts than other brands. Nomos is a consistent exception, although as likely to be a design geek as watch geek. Which is OK, as I enjoy learning about design too. Recent memorable modern conversation generators: FP Journe, GO Panograph, PP 5170J.

A little like the old school restaurant maitre d's who size up people by the quality of their shoes, wristwear does give me some clue who I am dealing with.

I like it here because of the lack of pretension.
In fact, I'm still feeling upset that I was so triggered by the Singaporean Watch Overlord. It just gets my bearded goat that someone would come on here and flash their collection of status quo collectible Rolexes and want a title.
They simply don't know how hard it is to make a collection out of scouring little known references than by sheer spending power.
They don't know that Omega, Longines, Vacheron and UG are so much cooler than Rolex.
Wait a minute.
Am I an indie rocker?

I still drive the same blue 2008 Toyota Corolla with 115k miles on it. I could probably sell a few of my watches for more than it's worth. 馃槣

Well, my 90 Oldsmobile that I bought from my mom in 97 had 230k and finally died last year, only because I let a couple borrow it for a half a year and they destroyed it (literally hit a telephone pole). And my 2000 Chrysler Voyager has 210k and I drive it everyday. Lets just say I'm tight when it comes to buying another vehicle.
