Maybe look for a replacement case back and keep that one as a memento?
This sounds like a good solution. I had a watch with the original owner's name and ss# engraved on the back. I left it because it was perfect ID if the watch ever got stolen.

The OP watch is a rare Ref 145.022-68.
If the OP intends to find a replacement case, will need to be patient and search.

Given your adventure bond with that watch, selling is most likely not happening. Leave it alone or find a case-back from that reference.

He doesn't need to replace the case...just find another back to wear on it...the original back can
be saved and put away for originality's sake.
