I can only speak for my former workplace, but during lunch we were free to use the internet for non-work purposes. Of course there were limits regarding the type of sites we could use, but a watch forum would not be any violation of the rules.

Just a further thought . . .

And having arrived at a watch forum, perhaps you may say to yourself:

"I had better not click on the "Tell me a Joke," thread while I 'm here at work. I'll save that for when I get home. Ah, here's a thread where a guy wants to know what tools he'd need to replace a compression fit crystal. That's the ticket!"

And again, I'll happily follow the rules of a privately owned sight where I appreciate that I have been granted the privilege of asking questions and sharing my thoughts respectfully with other like-minded people . . .and where I may learn from those who know more than I do and where I may occasionally help others.

I do I hope I am not digging a hole for myself?

I can only imagine what that thread would look like - it wouldn't be pretty I suspect.

That would depend on one's perspective. If you, for example, found the currently frozen thread to be off-putting, then you certainly wouldn't like a NSFW version. But there are more than a few members who enjoyed at least some of the ribald humor on that thread, and were not bothered by any of it, leading to the question of whether or not a NSFW version would necessarily lead to a significant degradation of quality. I tend to suspect not, as there would likely be internal pressure felt by those who were to post gratuitous crap, and/or consistently unfunny stuff.

The question is, would the members and mods want to be associated with a forum that has such a thread?

Well, if they find various types of humor, or attempted humor, to be offensive, then the answer would likely be no. I personally see no reason to be offended by even the clumsiest attempts. Of course running a business is a different matter.

Yes, I am not stupid and I fully understand this idea. If you look at what I was responding to, it was the notion that people should not be using this site at work - that is faulty logic - that was all I was pointing out.

What I believe is acceptable or not is irrelevant. The mods clearly had issues with what was being posted in that other thread, and using that standard (and using Ash's comments here in this thread as a gauge) it's pretty clear to me that a NSFW thread would be a non-starter.

The whole concept of “cancel culture” is ridiculous. Anyone can say anything they want- but being held accountable for what they say is the part many object to.

Agreed - it's not free speech that is under attack IMO, it's consequence free speech...there's a difference.

Full disclosure: dad was an NRA instructor, grew up around guns. We have a gun thread. Okay to have your boss catch you looking at pictures of guns, but a girl in a bikini no good?

While I agree that it almost certainly won't happen, Ash specifically highlighted the NSFW element as the primary problem, and I am simply pointing out that it is a problem which could easily be solved.

Please accept my apology, Al . . .

My post was not meant to be taken the way I now see it can be interpreted.

Yup. I think people are quick to react that their “freedoms” are being restricted- no they aren’t! We are free to do, go and say what we want in the northern Americas (and other countries that value “free”speech) - but there is a new sense of accountability that wasn’t there before.

I can walk into my office, slap our archivist on the ass, put my feet up on the desk for 8 hours and take a 2 hour 3 martini lunch. But I shouldn’t be surprised when my actions come with consequences.

Your interpretation of the "problem" is slightly different than mine. No idea who is right, but from what I gathered, they simply do not want that content on this site. As Ash says often, you can go elsewhere for that stuff.

Yea this is the exact whataboutism garbage that makes us more inclined to just dump it altogether. Having to spend an hour arguing over a single joke with one guy is like pulling fingernails.

Personally, I don't want to see either here on a watch site. But the mods have deemed that the guns thread is acceptable, so I am fine to live with that. If I wasn't, I would leave.

I'll see your "cancel culture" and raise you a "don't say gay."

There's intolerance on both sides of the political spectrum.

It's pretty obvious who is liberal and who is conservative. Tell me what you laugh at and I'll tell you what kind of person you are.

Instead of using the standard of what could be shown at work, how about the standard of remaining friends?

BTW, I find that video very funny but it's also been all over the internet. I also like dsio's standard of saving some crap for FB, and STANDY's reminder that what brings people here is an inordinate interest in watches that other people find annoying, including the people we live with in real life.

I include myself in this as I have crossed the line in the past and posted things I knew would push some people's buttons.

The discussion doesn't sound like there's any question about what is over the line. The objections seem to be about other people's line and what they should tolerate.

If your boss’s child was killed in a school shooting and you are browsing pictures of guns at work when they walk by, be prepared for them to have a reaction- it’s about being aware of your environment and knowing the audience.

And sidebar, I too am a gun owner.

Don’t agree. If you want to eliminate all potential triggers, then eliminate them all. Irrespective of who’s walking by.

What about us folks that work from home, & have to self police what content we choose to look or laugh at 😗 . And so,

Comic Sans, Helvetica , and Times New Roman walk into a bar .
"Get Out!" shouts the barman ." We don't serve your type here!"

My type of humour usually ends up with someone saying to me " are you being funny " .
