I thoroughly enjoyed his interviews with Maynard James Keenan and with Elon Musk, two very smart chaps.

It's interesting to see a couple people from different countries having very limited knowledge of someone who is so well known (dare I say, "popular", in this thread. haha) in the US. I definitely assumed that he had an international level of exposure, only to find out he's not a big a deal in other parts of the world.

Well, that proves again that US != the world.

Guy that does MMA and fear factor. That’s all I know or thought he done.
Not that big in Australia.

Funny but I find myself looking up a lot of US people I’m supposed to know when I have been in the States with work.
Yet Crocodile Dundee was/is the only Australian most Americans know. 😉

Two words...Nicole Kidman 😀

The most popular podcaster in the world. Someone who is part enough of general social discourse that it’s surprising you wouldn’t be aware of them.

And by “failed standup” I assume you mean a person who appeared on multiple successful syndicated network comedies before the age of 35, which by any measure is massive success in an incredibly competitive profession.

Let’s try and at least be intellectually honest here.
Well I'll be honest and say I've never heard of him. I'll go a bit further and speculate he is little known in uk as a whole

Movie stars. Easy, like Hugh Jackman and Hemingsworth brothers even Heath Ledger, ...... actors are easy.

Asked the Mrs who Joe Rogan was and she said it Seth Rogan not Joe..... Joe Rogan never heard of him, so go figure... said it was the MMA guy she replied “Let’s get ready to rumble” I am still laughing......... ( She is more internet/celebrities up to date than me and listens to a ton of podcasts )

Funny as Australia had a first flat earth meeting in 2018 and only 3 people turned up. So a lot of what happens in the USA is not really a thing outside the USA

Usually hollywood actors yes, anything else. Many baseball, hockey, NFL or basketball players besides one or two I wouldn’t know what they play or who they are until I look them up.

Do know Darwin Australia is still world ice hockey champions again this year..

Bravo, but that black tar like substance you guys spread on toast looks like what I scrape out of O-ring groove on vintage watches...probably tastes the same too! 😀

BTW, adding "ice" in front of "hockey" is redundant. Hockey is played on ice. If you play it on grass, it's called "field hockey" and it a girls sport here. 😉

Heard the name, someone I know I've probably seen in something but can't quite picture it, and only when someone mentioned Fear Factor did the name click. Had no idea he did podcasts...or that he was a comedian...just figured he was a game show host...

It’s hardly a straw man. Those people have been on multiple times, and that was just off the top of my head there are a lot more. Your point about giving viewpoints not given by mainstream... that’s exactly the point. Some people do not need a larger voice. See above list for examples.

I’ve listened to him and I find him inane. I choose not to listen to him, just as I choose not to listen to his standup back in the day.

although his bit on “this isn’t happening” is quite hilarious I’ll give him that.
You suggested that he was a “failed standup comic” which is a tough argument to make regarding a man who leased his podcast for over $100M to Spotify and regularly sells out arenas. I’d love to hear your bar for being “successful”.

And he presents people with a variety of voices and views, some of which he agrees wjth and others he does not. I think this is sorely lacking in modern discourse, where most live in echo chambers with zero views that challenge their own. I certainly wouldn’t suggest that this is a problem - having a range of people and views is the fundamental backbone of diversity, which I would hope you are for, even if a small subset of views you (and I) may disagree with.

If you don’t like him, that’s an entirely reasonable position - I don’t listen for Rogan when I do listen, I listen for his guests. But when someone asks who he is, starting off with him being a “failed comedian” simply isn’t true, is needlessly cynical and suggests you may have a biased view.

I guess if you're not a loud, outspoken moron who can listen to someone with an opposing opinion as your own, without losing your mind that makes you 'neutral' these days. I thought that just made you an adult. ::shrug::

False equivilancy is a lot of what is wrong with the world.

Flat earthers do not deserve a wide audience and neither do a bunch of other nut jobs that spout nonsense.
Rogan has form for giving them a platform.

For that reason he is not part of my listening

All opinions are not equal and do not deserve equal time. Conspiracy theories and cries of fake news are a blight on humanity

Rogan has various opinions as to veracity of the Moon Landings, they change dependant of what suits best. That should tell you all you need.

I'm all up for debate, but not alternative facts

Who decides who “deserves” a platform? This is where your argument becomes problematic.

I tend to think that shining a light on ideas exposes them, good and bad. If an idea is bad (flat earth), I trust the majority of rational human beings that hear it to not buy in. What happens if someone is brilliant but has one flawed view? Should we never hear any ideas from them ever? These are 3 hour discussions - I’m sure there’s something in every episode that you or I wouldn’t agree with. Should they not publish them? Are you the arbiter of what deserves and does not deserve to be heard by society? If not, who should be? Are there any potential dangers there?

do you know how many mainstream views from 70 years ago are now palpably ridiculous? The things we think we know now are inevitably going to make us backwards to people in 100-200 years.... ideas that those of the time thought didn’t “deserve” a platform have turned out to be true. By no means all, or even most.... but that’s why ideas need to be debated and discussed, not hid away and silenced. Even then, he can have Elon Musk, the head of virology at Yale, Robert downey Jr., a prominent dietician, Anthony Bourdain, a Navy SEAL and 200 other interesting guests, but he has one or two with unusual viewpoints and for you there is zero nuance? You cannot listen to Elon musk because two months ago someone came on who thinks the world is flat?

Flat earth, anti vaxxers, climate science deniers, holocaust deniers. All are concepts on the rise. Many many people are not rational and believe a lot of what they read/hear if they trust the source, they dont get the importantance or concept of peer review or of critically researching themselves. False equivilancy magnifies this problem.

I dont waste my time on these ideas and I dont waste my time on Joe Rogan.

Spot on. Unfortunately people who give these views time to be "aired out" also lend them legitimacy, which is not a good thing. This debate goes back long before what's his name started doing podcasts...the only time these crazy views should be brought to light is when discrediting them with evidence.

We’re not eliminating irrational people. So you’re suggesting we can only discuss mainstream views as a result? What about universities? Nobody should explore alternative views lest someone in society hear them who shouldn’t?

I do not believe we ought to be running society based around the lowest common denominator...

Also, have you heard any “Holocaust deniers” on joe Rogan? Speaking of false equivalency....

Which is what happens over three hours - these views are discredited wjth evidence.... this is the very nature of his podcast that you’re describing! If your view is that ideas should discussed and discredited with evidence, would that not be something you support?

I think of myself as being a fairly up to date on most issues and I have never heard of him.

Perhaps he's well known in the US and not so much in the rest of the world?

Don’t bother. Conspiracy theories wrapped in pseudo intellectualism.

Right... great summary of Elon Musk, cancer researchers and other incredibly interesting people featured on this show over the course of 300 episodes a year...

Perhaps some listen to every episode but I would imagine most cherry pick based on guests. I’ll skip Kanye West, but I’m interested in a Philosophy professor from Brown....

Is it? People are saying he stays neutral...again I don't listen to him, so no idea what he does or doesn't do. I'm not commenting on him specifically, but the idea of airing these views.

He does not stay neutral.

A wide swath of views are explored - the vast, vast majority would be ones I would imagine most here would find interesting. If you haven’t heard the podcast it’s challenging to express an opinion on it, no?
