Japan Racing or Apollo 8 - Which to keep?

@bbp I think you have a winner from your fellow OF members, crucially what's your opinion now?

Personally, if I had either I would try to hold onto them but obviously I don't know your reasons to consider letting one go at this time.

I really don't think it is unwearable for most people, its size has never crossed my mind. But in the OP's situation I'd let the Apollo 8 go, it can be more easily replaced in the future.

Of course, it's a matter of taste. I've also seen people wearing pilot watches 😀… But I would say that most of us prefer lug-to-lug length to be less than wrist width. Which means that Apollo 8 does not really qualify for a lot.

Pic found on the net (not mine of course)

Classic Speedmasters will always be in demand and popular. The Japan Racing is a beauty. Keep it.

Wow, I'm going to be in the severe minority here, voting for the Apollo. Why? Because I don't care for the colors in that Japan Racing, and I have the Apollo myself so I know what an awesome piece it is. Yes, it is large, but I have tiny waif-like girlie wrists, and I can pull it off.

I guess the question is "why does the OP need to sell?" Is it a need for cash money, keep the wife happy, buy something else, or just trolling because he's bored? In which case the value of the watch may have more influence in the decision.

When I decide to slim down the collection, I do it purely by wear time. Whichever one is worn the least, goes.

I tend to analyze from a value perspective and would also need to factor in my actual cost basis on the watches too.

It’s possible that Japan was purchased anywhere from $3k to $13k+ depending on when it was bought so it could potentially pay for the Apollo 8, which is a really cool watch.

Collectability aside, Id probably go for the Apollo 8.

I'm purely a novice that just loves to collect watches and based simply on aesthetics, the Japanese Racing is a stunner. But, if it were me and I had both of those in my possession, I'd never let either one go.

Japan Racing and not close. One of my favourite modern Speedys.

That said, why not keep the one you like better regardless of any other factors.

Keep them both! They are both different enough to have in the same collection, and money isn't real.
I would love to keep both but i have to sell one to fund for another one...too many watches i like but not enough funds...🫨

I like both. Is there anywhere online where I can learn more about the Japan Racing? I don’t know much about it. Thanks.

I bot it last june and the cost is near to the higher end of the spectrum.. so from value/investment perspectives, i guess the ap8 may have better potential.. but i didnt buy the watch for investment purpose.

i love the JR colors... i may be wrong but it is one of the most colorful if not the most colorful speedy. I too have a small wrist (6.5inches) but am used to wearing bigger size watches. Both are on nato which my wife’s with a tiny wrist also loves to wear and she prefers the ap8. But i have a final say which to sell.😁

LOL, did you guys (and gals) see that? Oh my, he actually thinks that it's his decision!!! Woo hoo, funny.

Now, you know I'm j/k, right? Although my wife keeps stealing my stuff, claiming that it's all "ours" fortunately she has yet to "borrow" a watch.

You'll regret it for sure. If you managed to buy this one, but can't buy another one because of the funds maybe just save until you have enough. I've never sold a firearm that I didn't regret and wished I had just saved the money to fund the next purchases.

Of those two I prefer the Japan Racing, although I'm a fan of the Apollo 8, despite my wife remarking that it looked like a nice watch whose dial had partly melted.
