It's a very important project, hope all goes well, it's been decades in the making. Another 'failure is not an option' moment.

If it wasn’t at like 3 am my time I’d watch it. I’ve never watched an Arianne system launch.

It's staggering to contemplate what this instrument has the potential to show us. We (all humans) *SO* need this right now.

The tech, science and engineering behind this is mind blowing. After 10 billion spent you better hope the thing delivers some results.

Wow! Way better than the usual Christmas morning fare - loving the Santa hats in mission control, and the French accents are just lovely. 🙄
Oh - and this is the science and technology we need to validate ourselves as a species. Fingers crossed for payload deployment...

I wouldn't say that exactly. I mean I'm certainly glad that the telescope launch was successful, but losing an Apollo mission and three astronauts at the height (depth?) of the cold war would have been way worse than losing any unmanned mission.

Apollo 1 would like a word

NASA especially has put so much money and brainpower into this project over the last 25 years that if it does fail, it will be a massive blow to the idea that space is something we explore vs something we commodify and exploit. We're not out of the woods until we get the first pictures back.

I have not forgotten Apollo 1, and it was way worse than loss of any unmanned mission would have been. Especially since it wasn't even a space mission yet.

Losing James Webb would easily be the second worst thing to happen to space exploration after Apollo 1. The Challenger and Columbia losses were absolutely tragic, but in this day and environment, losing James Webb would be much worse for the cause of space exploration. I'm not sure NASA in it's form as a scientific agency would survive it.

Great to see the launch go off without a hitch! The next big milestone will be the various deployments/unfoldings, which occur in stages until late January, when the final orbit point is reached. That process is incredibly complicated, with dozens and dozens of "single point failure" components - so keep your fingers crossed.
