I just don't get it. We all know Apple's first gen on this doesn't do half of what they wanted it to do. That means the second gen will make this completely obsolete in less than a year.

The bracelets will be usable for maybe two gens and then BOOM, they will redesign the case and you will have to buy another expensive bracelet.

For me the sign things won't go through the roof is that not one of my NYC or L.A. Asian friends has made a single Facebook post about ordering the Apple Watch. Last October my Facebook news feed was made up entirely of pics of newly purchased iPhone 6 and 6+ models.

All of them are Apple freaks and buy anything and everything Apple and yet with the Apple Watch... Silence. Interesting.

1 million sold on day one just in the USA, that means globally they beat Rolex's entire yearly sales in 24 hours.

BREAKING NEWS!

I have it on reliable authority that Omega Forum's own Ashley will be the first general purchaser to be getting his watch early.
Omega forums will be featuring a live feed Skype page featuring Ash's first call.👍

It's already in the price. This was exactly as expected.

The question is how many will be sold after all the "early adopters" get theirs in a few months.

I think its going to end up being quite an interesting product as time marches on, and while there's no doubt going to be even more features on the Gen 2, I think its going to be battery life that's focused on most, which will also increase for Gen 1 as it matures.

The most unique thing about the Apple watch is that unlike the smart watches that have come before it like the Galaxy Gear 1/2 it has no 3D graphics chip, and uses a fundamentally different approach, frame by frame .png images being used to play back pre-rendered animations.

Three things come about from that, one is that no animations can be truly interactive, all have to be pre-calculated before the software is installed or rendered on the iPhone and sent for playback on the watch which sounds awful initially to anyone with an IT/software background.

Secondly though, its FAST, while a low power 3D chip could get bogged down or need to be very power hungry to deliver consistent performance, no matter how simple or complex, flipping between .png images to display animations is 60FPS smooth consistently as all its doing is sequentially reading from memory, not any real math or calculation.

Thirdly, its extremely efficient, any graphics chip would require muscle and power to achieve anything even on a small retina display, while optimizing the entire SoC and OS to replay .pngs requires a fraction of the power.

Also while Apple's making very conservative claims on the battery at the moment, the current figures of 18 hours typical use are based on the smaller 38mm version, the 42mm does have more capacity and greater life, and both will see improvements, potentially significant ones during the OS development.

No, it has a regular graphics chip. The pre-rendered approach is only for 3rd party applications (it's not exactly as you describe but close enough for this audience).

Given how badly so many off the shelf apps abuse even the hardware in current iPhone's and iPads I can definitely see why they did it, its going to mean we're not going to see anything like traditional games but once people get around the approach there could be some very interesting results.

I still think it'll drain the iPhone battery to the point where you are recharging your phone during the day. I'd rather wear any on my mechanicals over that.

Shouldn't really do that to the iPhone either, Bluetooth 4.0 is pretty energy efficient efficient and most of what its doing is passing on notifications that are already happening on iOS apps installed on your phone.

And the phone screen won't light up when receiving notifications while wearing the watch, saving power.

Have been in Hamburg yesterday to see the incredible long rows of Apple watch waiting folks.
But no lines no huges crowds around the tables.
Watched the scene for about 15 min.. Some tried different models, but i could not say that there were any deals done.

That'd be because deals can't be done at all, they're not for sale atm in stores

Currently demand is still so high that they wouldn't be able to maintain supplies in stores so its online order only, they're selling more than Rolex's entire annual production per week at the moment. There are indications by September or so they'll have caught up enough to offer them in store.
