I've just turned "50" looking for suggestions on a 1968 model

The 145.012-68 would be nice if you can find one, though what's wrong with a nice 145.022-68 transitional?

A nice no-date SM300 would be cool too, as would Rolex options like a Mark I (Long-E) fuchsia Rolex GMT 1675, Explorer 1016, or meters first Submariner 5513 (or 5512 for a bit more than your price). Having owned all of them, each is a great daily wear. You should be able to find a very good example with period bracelet for that sum.

If you think a 145.012-68 would be expensive, try this one 😀

‘condition condition condition’ IMHO makes finding a 145.012-68 in the same condition as this equally as rare, unattainable and expensive 😉

A bit left field maybe but the Chronostops were current in 68, the larger 40mm model wears very well and would leave plenty of budget for something else.

A poor pic of mine:

This being OF, most advice has been, and quite rightly too, to get a Speedy.

Other options, depending on your budget and whether you want a dress, sports, chronometer or diver and if you ant something different include: UG Compax, JLC, a Tudor Submariner (nice one being sold on here as well I think), Rolex Oyster/Datejust...Good luck though and hope you can persuade someone else to buy it for you as birthday present!

Would love to see some of those scooters!

As others have suggested, I would also recommend the '68 145.022 Transitional. I love mine.

Alternatively, I would be looking at a Rolex Submariner or GMT Master
