Is PayPal falling out of favor ?

Oh yeah, PayPal G&S will certainly protect the buyer. Even unscrupulous, shitbag buyers and even at the expense of an honest and truthful seller. The scams work both ways. And for the record, "net to me" or "fees on you" annoy the fυck out of me, too. Just tell others how much money you need or want.

I occasionally get invoices or requests emailed to me. I go to the website, log in, and have never seen anything. Purely spam emails.

The emails I received yesterday came from Paypal, because a scammer sent me an invoice through their system. The invoice appears in my account when I log in.

There should be an option to ask them to cancel the invoice too.

I requested to cancel the two invoices I was sent yesterday and got a message saying they need to be canceled by the sender.

Paypal also had a message on the same page as the invoices that, to me, had a tone that indicated this sort of user experience is an accepted reality for them.

Here is the message from the "Seller" followed by the warning message from Paypal. The impression I get is that this is as far as their going to go to address this problem. I think the "Contact Us" language reads like "Contact us if you're confused, but we're not going to do anything to address this beyond telling you if it this is most likely a scam or not."

Maybe this feature exists, I haven't looked yet, but it would be nice if you could only accept invoices from verified businesses or members of your contact list to eliminate or at least cut down on this nonsense. I don't even see a way to report the invoice as a scam. This all is a serious strike against Paypal for me. I'm not likely to continue using a platform where I am receiving regular scam attempts.

If I took this approach, I would have to stop using any email account, stop using my phones, and stop opening the front door when someone knocks...

Both my email and phone accounts have the capability to report, filter, and reduce spam or potential scams, and I would hope for an even higher level of security in this area from a platform whose main purpose is financial transactions.

Edit: I’ll amend my original statement to say I’m unlikely to continue using a financial platform where I am receiving regular scam attempts.

I think would be naive to think that PP doesn't have those things, but just like the filters I have on things like emails, they aren't perfect.

If I read your complaint correctly, there was no scam, just an attempted scam, correct? And the primary issue now is that the invoice can't be removed from your account, but you can just ignore it, right? I mean the final firewall against a scam is knowing that whatever you are being invoiced for isn't real, right?

Even credit card companies tell you to regularly check your statement for fraudulent transactions, so clearly they know that their systems aren't perfect either.

When eBay dropped them maybe 2 years ago it was probably the beginning of the end for them.
As mentioned they are all for the buyer and not the seller but I’ve never had an issue with them, however I now choose to use Revolut or Wise when I trust/buy the seller because of the fees.

I like Payal for the buyer protection. As a seller, not so much. Their fees are quite steep and like others have mentioned, the dispute resolution process is often arbitrary and biased towards the buyer.

Ebay and their new financial system is not much better. I recently sold my AT 8900 on fleabay - fees were almost 10%. The buyer test-drove my watch for over a week, then opened a case for "item not as described." Ebay notified me that the buyer opened a case and they had resolved it in his favor and that the watch has been shipped back to me - no opportunity for me to participate. Buyer was refunded 100% of his money and I lost the shipping and insurance costs.

Watch came back with a scratched up bracelet, scuffed up wooden box and a torn gift box. At least Ebay is offering to compensate me - they're asking me how much I want, but I don't know how to put a dollar figure on it.

eBay for international transaction is 13% . Exchange rate is as lousy as with PayPal. I charge the buyer 4.5% on top, if they insist on PayPal. PayPal has been taken to court here in Australia and they are careful to not loose their banking licence. I challenged 2 buyer initiated cases over the years and communicated direct per email, not that stupid intern system. After much resistance from PayPal in the first case, I challenged them with my case against PayPal at the financial oversight Ombudsman. Once they wanted details from PayPal about their reasoning, I got re imbursed within 2 days. The second case I referred to the first case and got the money straight away. There are always avenues....

Quick update: eBay approved my claim and they agreed to reimburse me $748 for the damage to my watch and box. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised.

So, my estimate worked for them. Great! Congratulations.

Yes, thank you very much. My local jeweler did me a favor and gave me a written estimate.

Within 30 minutes of submitting it, ebay called me to tell me they approved it. I thought it was going to be much more difficult

I have to say they’re not the worst - it’s a lot easier to get through to their customer service (and speak to a human) compares to most organisations of their size. I use Revolut but you need the patience of a saint to wait to speak to a human and from my experience they’re very unhelpful.

I still use Paypal. But I try to avoid it if I can. I once had a very, very bad experience with Paypal as a seller.

Agreed. I still use it sometimes as a buyer, but haven't sold anything on ebay for years because I don't want to be paid with paypal.

I finally deleted my PayPal account last month. I hadn't used it in over a year. In that time, I've used Zelle twice to pay for some stuff and been paid twice using Zelle. Success in a respects.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one here. I stopped using PayPal a couple years back after getting scammed repeatedly by fraudulent buyers thanks to PayPal's 'buyer protection' policy. They went a step further and permanently restricted my account. So basically I ended up losing my watches, my money (since I hadn't withdrawn it yet), and still getting banned. ::facepalm1::

Anyway, I started using PayPal again recently for the first time in years (a friendly and trustworthy buyer convinced me, so it was never his fault in a million years). I shipped the watch and uploaded the tracking info promptly. The buyer confirmed receiving it, but PayPal still wants to hold my money for 3 weeks, which makes no sense other than that they want to do some appropriation of customers' money. I'm not even talking about the ridiculous 5% fee and their laughable exchange rate. So yeah, no more PayPal for me. ::rimshot::Going Wise!

Poor exchange rates, high fees, long hold times when you sell, and the security features are maddening. The only positive is 0% financing with PayPal credit provided that you pay off the charge in full prior to the expiration of the 6 month promo period.

I have developed a favor for Paypal, wherein I am typically on the buyers side. It provides safety when buying from persons unknown to me. In case of persons known to me, I like to use Paypal FF for transactions to non-EU countries, because it is so much more comfortable than wiring money to abroad. Finally, Paypal charges my credit card, so that I in any case can call back money withdrawn by them without cause.

My test for potentially fraudulent sellers is to offer to absorb the Paypal Business fees at my end. If a seller insists on Paypal FF or bank wire and rejects Paypal Business, I typically answer "I am fine with that and will attend to the wire or Paypal FF as soon as the item has arrived here". Guess what the reaction is, if any 😁 Why should I trust someone who expresses distrust towards me ...
