Is My Collection Ruined?

Well, when you are held in such high esteem as a vintage dealer/collector that your watches are featured on Hodinkee's "Bring a Loupe", you are allowed to make such claims and belittle the mere mortals.

I feel so humbled. Guess my dreams of having one of my watches featured on a blog are shot...they might as well be redialed with an over polished case.
I'm sure he's a legend in his own mind.馃え

Hm, all this time, I've just turned the crown until the hands pointed to the right time..

Some people...

Agree that it sounds like this fella is a pseudo-scammer, paying for and receiving a watch, then highlighting issues (real or fake) hoping that a seller will refund a significant chunk, rather than go through the hassle of a return.

Call his bluff, tell him to return for a full refund (obviously insist upon insured shipping), and name and shame him (or at least point him to this thread).

I'll take them off your hands (wrists?) for a heavily discounted price considering the horribly messed up setting mechanisms. I really shouldn't pay you at all for them, but I will. Only because I'm a nice guy 馃槈

I'll be a bit nicer and offer $100 USD for the lot.

P.S. If you go for this offer, I'm sure I can turn around and fund my 2 year olds entire education with that worthless bunch of metal.

Well, this thread might lead to a new area of development - the bi-directional setting complication!
This totally unnecessary complication (not a new concept) would allow the user to determine in which direction he would like to turn the crown to set the hands. I still need to figure out the mechanics, but one could envision a system operated by pulling out the crown to different positions to engage/bypass additional gears.

If he insists on his rethoric ask him to get a certified letter from a watchmaker that you can follow up with stating what he believes to be "fact" let him put his money where his mouth is.

I would not classify the buyer as a scammer, but rather an unscrupulous buyer that has no qualms making up falsehoods, and backing them up with his perceived expertise and knowledge in hopes of intimidating the seller. I did give back a partial refund for the perceived dial issue because I could see his point, an I work with all of my buyers to make sure that they are happy and I am happy. Coming back the next day for another bite at the apple with complete fabrication of pluperfect manure? No way.

No name and shame here, but I will disclose his identity to any interested party.

I will say that based on my experience, when dealing with someone that is not known on the forums, BEWARE.

A friend of mine recently bought an IWC from a well known dealer in HK, and the seller put him through his paces to make sure he was not a BS buyer that would get the watch and pull crap once the watch was received. My buddy could not understand all of the hoops, and I explained how important it is on Int'l sales to know the buyer for protection. It looks like I am now going to look for references in certain cases for buyers as well.

Whoa whoa @watchknut I said discounted not free! I'll double his offer and pay $200 for the lot! (I'm sure I can still turn a profit at the scrap yard)

Could just be semantics, but this sure sounds like a scam to me. 馃槈

I agree he didn't claim that there was a rock in the box or something like this, but anyone who lies like this in order to profit from it is a scammer in my books.

Please PM me the buyers information so I can add it to my list of "people to not accept watches for service from".

Cheers, Al

And all this time I thought I was plain dumb for being incapable of remembering which direction to wind a watch. I would wind a watch and the next time (different watch) I was clumsily trying to wind it the wrong way, without paying attention that they indeed wound in different directions...

I think it's obvious that your collection is totally worthless. Being the kind and generous individual that I am, I will fly to your location and take them off your hands. I will even buy you a drink.馃榿
