introducing myself

Hello All,

I'm a relative noob to this hobby. I've read "learn how to fish" (very helpful), and other internet related info on the above watch. I have a few watches: Seiko 5 Actus ('72), Helbros Invincible (my g-father's piece '40s-'50s guess), and Bulova Accutron ('71--dad's engagement gift from wife #2 and my daily wear fav!). Also have a Rolex Cellini (dad's watch from the early 2000s which will be sold eventually) in great shape. I'm a boomer and love the sixties/seventies eras. I set off looking at sixties/seventies watches and the one that speaks to me the most is the Omega Geneve Dynamic. Love the styling and metal Omega band! So, I'm looking for a relatively original piece w/o dial repainting, blue dial (original plexiglass preferred), original steel bracelet/band (wrist measures 7"/178mm), and no date function preferred. I've looked at Chrono24 and although there are many choices, they are too expensive and I'd rather buy from an enthusiast than a profiteer. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve.

Start by reading this: http://www.mediafire.com/file/knazxmyqdzd/Omega Geneve Dynamic I .pdf
Avoid later watches with the 10xx movements.
Good luck. I love mine.

Welcome.....we all love to see pix of watches, please post when you can.

Is this a Want To Buy thread?馃槜 If so, you need 198 more substantial posts before Forum Rules allow such.

There are subtle ways around this rule, and a substantial number of members who can overlook an early misstep.

The MODS are less likely to be understanding, so I would start apologizing now and maybe continue into tomorrow to assuage their unrelenting fury and general surliness. 馃榿

Can you post a picture of the reference you鈥檙e looking for. I think I can picture it (oval shaped case?) but there may be a variety of case shapes with the same name.

Regardless, the best advice is take your time, do plenty of reading and be patient. If you must buy the watch this week, you can probably have one in good condition but will pay a premium.
If you鈥檙e flexible on time and prepared to wait, you鈥檒l be able to find a good one at a good price.
Put another way, you can generally choose 2 out of the following 3;
1. Good condition.
2. Good price.
3. Available now.

There are a ton of threads on these boards about the Geneve Dynamics. I got my dad's 1969 model (ref 166.079, 752 movement) as a hand me down gift from him back in October. $800 seems to be in the right ballpark for prices I've seen on eBay and watchcharts, but there's a lot of variance depending on condition and exactly what you're looking for.

The Dynamics on Chrono are usually priced on the (very) high side. You can occasionally find a decently priced one on eBay but that is rare nowadays. Check out small auction houses and, as advised above, take your time.

what is the opinion of this piece, aside from the "high price?"
i like its apparent originality. this is what i'm interested in.
i don't need a date function.

Can you post a few pictures, not just the links. It makes the thread useful for others on the future who may be researching the same model long after the link has died.

These aren鈥檛 a model I follow but given the integrated bracelet and unique case shape which is a major part of the overall aesthetic, be sure to familiarise yourself with the edges/finishes etc of the original case. An overpolished example will kill value/attraction even more than normal.
The integrated bracelets can be a pain to repair and source additional links for. Make sure any examples you consider have a tight bracelet with minimal sag and are the correct length for your wrist, or larger.

thank you all for your helpful suggestions so far. chrono24's nicest omega geneve dynamic watches are nearly $2k!
i'm not in a hurry and rather enjoying the hunt, so to speak. also, the time educating myself as to what i'm looking at
is worthwhile, imo.

It's not an integrated bracelet. The bracelet attaches to the case through a proprietary system that uses a locking ring on the back of the case. This also means that the movement is accessed/removed from the dial/crystal/front side of the case. But on the other point about finishes, definitely pay attention to the finish and edges, since the bezel on those first gen models is supposed to have a fine sunburst finish pattern on it that can be taken off by careless/aggressive polishing.

Good to know. It鈥檚 the same result though. It鈥檚 a very specific bracelet, rather than an 1171 or similar and so it鈥檚 much easier to get a watch with the right sized bracelet in good condition rather than trying to find spare links or a new bracelet.

i'm a mod in an automotive forum and like this one, our forum is quite diverse. we have a 30 post minimum b4 pics can be posted, but anyone can sell or place a wanted ad w/o repercussions, even as a noob. i don't think anyone would accuse the auto forum of being just a sales platform, like this one, as its diversity is similar to this one. in the auto forum, if a noob posts that he needs help buying a car that our forum supports, lots of peeps come to his aid. i get that there are diff. rules for diff. forums, but to have a rule that discourages peeps from getting help runs contrary to my def. of common sense.
