Interesting Speedy projects with a donor 1836 I am considering.

the packaging looks odd on this one.
Also found it odd that they've shown two clearly different types of dials in their listing photos.

Yeah, I think the dial they are trying to sell is what 140dave alluded to, it could be for the Omega Teutonic as I'm looking at the white example. It does not have the "Professional" on the dial, but the Teutonic uses the same movement 861 as the Speedmaster. The other picture is a similar dial that is in a Speedmaster to show how it looks. But it's obvious that the one they are trying to sell is the dial WITHOUT the Professional script. I'm going to pass on this one, but I do like the look. Just want to wait for one that has the Professional on the dial if I'm going to pay over $1-$2k for just a dial.

Sensible. The dial in my Speedy shown above does feature the Professional text and isn’t flat like this one. It’s got a pronounced step inside the minute track, like the early 60s / 70s dials had (and recently revived in the latest modern Speedies).

I’ll look for the packaging of my dial to find the reference number. Might take me some time…

Edit: found. But not very helpful. Tried Googling the EAN, to no avail. 🤔 (7612882167363).

All my Speedys, of which several are modified...............back in the day when the dials, hands etc, were more easily available and at a more normal price. The price of dials these days is just crazy

Thank you all for your advice and efforts in researching!

I think I found my mod to revive my 1836 Sapphire Sandwich. I was able to find a seller that sold me a sealed Apollo 11 35th Anniversary panda dial and a sealed silver handset for a decent price that was way better than any store or eBay seller.

The Sapphire Sandwich case back also looks similar to each other in that it has the polished writing on the edges with a sapphire center. Mine would still be the exhibition, while the Apollo 11 35th has the Eagle Has Landed sapphire crystal and I see some of these for sale on The Bay. I guess if I really wanted to take the risk, I can see if the exhibition case back sapphire crystal is interchangeable with the Eagle Has Landed sapphire crystal.

I see no need to put a real 35th back on your watch, just put the new dial and hands on and call it a day.

Thanks for guidance. Yeah, one of the main reasons I kept my 1863 is to continue to be able to see the movement.

Thanks! I appreciate that you tried to research the Omega Part # for the silver dial. I must admit that looks very special and I have not found one comparable with "Professional" on the dial. Even though I'm in the process of receiving my Apollo 11 35th dial mod, what do you think about the value of doing a mod with an Apollo Soyuz dial from the 1970s?

I found a shop that is selling one, maybe service, maybe original. The price is steep, but the dial has provenance from SAV Omega as stated by the store. The dial is made by Singer per dial back. It might be the first "mod" that someone is not trying to pass off as a real Apollo Soyuz. And for the price other mod dials are going for now ($2500), paying the store's asking might not be too bad.

If you do some digging, you'll find there have been other discussions around modding Speedmasters (and probably other watches too) including debaters on the ethics of those.

On the Apollo Soyuz dial; I would personally choose against that dial as an option for a mod. Main reason is that it wouldn't produce an obvious mod with its own 'personality', but something that is trying to pass off for what it isn't. Someone who's handled a real one will instantly notice yours isn't (because of the size of the pusher caps, as I am pretty sure you know). Spending such a vast amount of money to get something that isn't what it appears to be, makes a lot less sense to me than making something more original / personal.

The mod i've shown above is one that isn't like anything else, bar, you could argue, the WG ones. But even those are quite different.

Anyway, to its his/her own. 😉

OMG it's like a NEW WATCH! I'm serious. I really couldn't believe it was my old 1863 Speedmaster when my watchmaker gave it back to me after installing the Apollo 11 35th Anniversary Dial mod. It's actually more of a silver/white dial that glows amazing with silver markers and silver hands.

And quite amazing that I found this dial combo so quickly for a decent price right after consulting with you all here, then I ordered the dial and hands yesterday afternoon, and it got Fed Ex to me overnight (it was a city in the same state and seller paid for it) and received this morning. Then my watchmaker was able to install it this afternoon and I just got it back tonight.

The 1863 sapphire crystal still shows a milky ring, but it's not as prominent over this silver/white dial than the regular Speedmaster black dial. Also, I found out that the Eagle Has Landed caseback is really just a sticker that covers the sapphire crystal of the regular 1863 exhibition caseback. I wonder it I could just buy the sticker...haha.

Thanks for all your help here and advice! And just think, a week ago I was about to sell my watch with a beautiful 1863 movement when I might have spent more for a Speedmaster with this dial later on.

That was incredibly quick! It looks awesome too!
Yeah it was. I was searching for different dials for a few days, but one suddenly popped up an auction site. I was able to work it out with the seller and he happened to live in a city in the same state I live in. He Fedex'd it to me and it only took overnight, in which I immediately picked it up in the morning, and then delivered the whole set to my watchmaker. I have a pretty good relationship with my watchmaker, so he said installing the dial and hands would only take him a day, and I could pick it up the next morning (tomorrow). But then I got the call late afternoon today that he finished it and just picked it up. He actually finished another watch of mine as well, which I will post about later in another thread (Crystal and Alpha Hands on a 105.002). Thanks for all your advice and guidance!

Holy smokes!!!
That was mighty quick!!! I think I've spent longer looking at hand/dial options for my potential watch mod project than your entire shipping & fixing took!! Lol.
Looks awesome!! Are you in CA by chance?

The Apollo 35th, Mitsukoshi and 2020 Tokyo dials are essentially the same and are some of the most attractive Speedmaster dials, imo. Between the three limited edition releases there are 5,920 examples with this panda style dial (3500 + 400 + 2020) plus an unknown number of modded ones when Omega freely sold the Apollo and Mitsukoshi dials to anyone. Even so there aren't that many of them out there, and the number of loose dials is dwindling all the time. You were fortunate to find one so quickly at an apparently good price.

Yup, near Los Angeles, and the seller of the dial lives in the Bay Area. Was surprised that the Fedex was overnight, literally less than 20 hours, to go across state delivered to me. He even sent a set of hands even later in the day, like at 6pm, and it still arrived at 10am this morning.

But to be honest, I was looking for different dials/hand options for a few days until I found the one he sold pop up a couple days ago.

Good price compared to today's market. Not a great price compared to even a few years ago. But I'm very happy that I did this mod now when I still can. Let's just say an overseas seller on eBay is selling a very blemished used version of this dial for $1800USD, a website listing this dial new is selling for 2999 Euros, and I found this dial sealed in Omega packaging and the silver hand set sealed in Omega packaging, shipped to me at considerable less than the blemished version.

There was another Apollo 11 35th Anniversary dial listed on eBay for a decent price that I think just sold. There was another blemished dial listed by an overseas seller for not a great price, considering it had many flaws on the dial. For the Apollo 11 35th, Mitsukoshi, etc., you should have a clean dial to appreciate how beautiful it is.

I am the buyer of the unopened Apollo 11 35th anniversary dial on eBay. Now I am left with the hands (considering Apollo soyuz or Apollo 11) for hunting plus a donor Speedmaster. I sold my Apollo 15 35 anniversary 2 years ago. The itch has returned but I wanted a panda.

Yeah, I have almost bought the blemished dial.

The seller also has the matching silver hand set available as well. I bought both the dial and hands from him together.
