You should absolutely not return to another address; this seems quite fishy. You should open up a claim with Ebay now and provide the messages.

It will be good if you can return it and I sincerely hope it works out. No harm in opening a claim with eBay and see what they think. It may depend on the details of the listing, since overall I'd say that the watch is still authentic, just with a refinished dial and perhaps replacement hands, both of which happen regularly with old watches and are very common. The majority of vintage watches sold on various platforms have issues like this and unless the listing specifically says that the watch is all-original, it may not be considered fraudulent.

Obviously I feel that sellers should be honest and transparent, and saying that a watch is "restored" or "refurbished" is a bit sneaky, since newbies don't always know what that means. However, many sellers may not even know the history, and these details can be pretty subtle. If a seller has a number of watches listed, I often look closely at all of them so that I can get a sense of the type of things he sells. Many sellers have a pattern. Some pick estate sales and flip things immediately. Others restore watches. It can be helpful to get some context if possible. Also, it's helpful to get a sense of different watch "cultures" around the world. In some places, it is particularly common to re-paint dials.

i don’t know how to contact ebay though! Because the returns claim is settled (he hit “accept” the day before I could have escalated (literally a few minutes after I wrote my earlier message), it’s not giving me any mechanism to contact them

Ok he’s now saying that I can return the watch but must declare its value as $15 or it “won’t go through customs”??

This is a tax evasion, just don't do it - any blowback or customs fines will fall on you. Follow the eBay returns steps, as discussed in your other thread.

Thank you for everyone who helped me with this. The case has now been closed and ebay has refunded me my money. This was done without me returning the watch, as the seller stopped communicating. Does anyone know what I do with the watch now? Do I still have to return it? I don’t especially want to keep it, but guess I could recover some of my loss with the tax by selling it clearly labelled a frankenwatch?

You’re financially out of pocket, so in your position I’d get what I could out of it.

Pleased to hear you’ve been reimbursed by eBay. Kudos to them.
My suggestion is that, just in case, you leave it in a drawer for the time being.

Well after a waiting a month, I have resold this watch, and with a very honest description- highlighting the redial and replacement hands - and have accepted an offer off £170 which after commission covers my loss on import taxes and a bit aside to go towards a nicer one.

Good for you. Also remember, when in doubt it’s always best to check with the forum before you pull the trigger.

Would you not reach out to original seller and offer to part refund them since that person ended up with no watch, no money and is even out of pocket for posting the watch to you from Argentina which must have cost circa $60? Putting the profit towards a nicer watch wouldn’t sit right with me. Just my perspective.

I contacted them several times and they didn’t reply. That was the whole reason why I ended up with a refund from ebay in the first place. The money is minimal; I’ve sold it for what it’s actually worth which leaves less than £100 after fees/postage loss.

However I do feel guilty now

You don’t need to feel guilty about someone who tries to mislead buyers by doctoring pictures, and then try to cheat again and then stops responding when you ask for a return.

That seller tried to cheat at every turn, I doubt he feels guilty for all the people he cheated, and whatever funds you got from him is well deserved retribution.
If you feel guilty for outsmarting a crook, then give your profit to a charity.

Thank you. He did have multiple opportunities to reply….all he needed to do if he wanted the watch back was send me a postsge label.
