I have to admit my new Seamaster 300m is a better watch than my Submariner

I would disagree, right now most people are leaning towards Rolex for the resale value not that much the actual watches. If prices are the same and resale value is the same I think side to side most people would take the Seamaster. After owning both I know that I like the Seamaster better than the Submariner. If someone would give me one for free I would get the Seamaster.

I believe you. I was obnoxious and clearly wrong in my assessment that 99 of 100 on this board would take a Sub over a Seamaster for free.

I would never have the capital or the interest to turn this thought experiment into an actual experiment, but if anyone else does … please include me in the live trials. 😀

I would 100% take the $15k sub over the $5k Seamaster as a free gift that can’t be resold. Because I don’t hate Rolex or think it’s gaudy dreck. Plus a free gift is the only way I will likely ever own a Sub, unless gray market falls all the way down to retail, which I think is unlikely any time soon. But I’m definitely willing to pay $5k for a Seamaster (and I have) so I could buy that myself.

I certainly hope the original poster doesn’t get too upset at how much this thread has devolved from his original intent, or think we are all putting down his decision — I for one can understand why he did what he did - the Speedmaster he traded for is a magnificent watch. If he sticks around, he’ll see many threads tend to go off on tangents from time to to time and it’s not personal — it’s just the nature of this community.

Hope he’ll stick around and contribute to other threads.

I'm proud to hang around with anyone who trades a GMT Master for a Speedmaster.

(As well as someone who keeps their watches 35 years.)

If having a new Sub is an aspirational thing for you, I can understand that. But it isn't for everyone.

If you had changed this to be vintage, I expect the answers would have been different - sure would have been for me, because the only Subs I have any desire to own don't have shiny dials, gold surrounds, ceramic bezels, and completely messed up case proportions like the new ones do. To illustrate I'm not a Rolex Hater, here's my 1680:

This was when shoveling the dirt from the access doors of the septic tanks a few weeks ago. Tanks inspected, passed, and pumped.

Almost all watch collectors are past the Rolex hype. Most watch collectors are not here for a “flex” watch.

I think if you did a survey of watch people the best diver of the past 25 years would likely be the 42mm 1st Gen Planet Ocean, or the JLC Tribute to the Deep Sea. I think both of these would take more votes then a traditional sub. Heck I even think if you get a sub you need to get a date, as the cyclops is part of the Rolex design heritage. I also want a no rehaut Kermit... but the thing is once you hit a point in watch collecting you run into the Rolex delimma ( and this was before the forced market scarcity.) The delimma is no matter how much you like them, they are the preferred watch for people that know nothing about watches when they want to get a nice watch. Want respect from a watch guy and have a rolex? Get something interesting, a vintage DJ in one of the super great combos (Gray Starburst Sigma Dial...) A killer patinaed vintage sub... Something that shows thought, not following the herd.

Now with the false scarcity and prices being driven up. The number of dive watches at or under 12k that are way better choices then a sub is very very long. And lets be honest if someone is impressed by your rolex, and ignores your JLC is that someones who's opionion really matters?

Real watch people who would actually judge you by your watch basically ignore you if you have a modern sub. Have a killer vintage seiko diver, and he is wearing a great vintage Patek... Odds are he will recognize your vintage Seiko and respect you for it. Respect the choice of style, and the hunt required to source one.

Poop, Rolex, and aspirational all in one post!

Impressive.

Over generalization here but those of us who would take the Rolex are probably people who don’t know if they’ll ever be able to afford a Rolex.

Most of my watches need to be purchased for under $500. The idea of being able to fork out the cash for a Rolex and feel comfortable wearing it is foreign to me. I’m too worried I’ll damage an expensive watch and not be able to afford a fix. My 2254.5 is the most expensive watch I have and I got a pretty good deal on it, I still push it way up my wrist when washing my hands.

I don’t want to buy watches I can’t wear, there are a few I’d consider going all in on but they’d be few and far between. None of them would be a Rolex, I’m an Omega man.

I don’t know how much the OP could have gotten for his Rolex in a private sale, but depending on his financial situation, the ease of a trade could far outweigh a few thousand in extra cash.

I hope to see some photos of the Speedy he traded for, wrist shots please!

I have a modern Rolex OP. I started liking it but now ended up leaving it in safe bank box as prices went up. It was a compromise getting this watch as I do not like everything about the OP. In the end I learned the hard way to wear what you like. My first love are dress watches. Hence getting Omega De V and Rolex can live in the safe.

Awe shucks fellas. It’s only because I post so much that I randomly get one right every once in awhile.

Because some or most (?) folks would prefer the Sub over the 300 assuming everything else equal. That’s the premise.

Congrats on the new watch but oh man what a bad financial deal that AD made out like a bandit! I don't understand how the 300m was a 10k watch doesn't the grey dial list for 5k? Besides that you should have gotten 20% minimum on the Omega. I paid cash for my white 300m and got 35% off I see used asking prices for more than I paid for a new 1.

There's literally nothing hard about selling 1 privately in this day and age. You join the Facebook Rolex buy and sell group get paid and ship it away or you only meet them face 2 face at a police station and bring a friend with you.

Not true there are a few in Toronto that carry both.

Say what? Was this recently? You negotiated the hottest 300M model during the pandemic down to $3380.00?
NIB from an actual AD? Did you buy multiple pieces at once?

There has to be catch. I’m not saying I don’t believe you, but this is a deal that simply can’t be replicated anywhere right now. If true, I tip my hat. I negotiated hard with three AD’s in 2 states for the least desired model (gray dial) and ended up at $4399 with an OEM rubber strap thrown in.

Interesting read, I am of the opinion that this thread would very much benefit from more photos, particularly from the OP. Always nice to see IRL photos of watches.

If selling a modern Sub wasn't a possibility to get something else, I would definitely opt for a
modern SM.

Thanks @Archer for the workrelated photo. My 1680 says hi:

If my searches are correct, this is what he actually traded for?

I would have kept the GMT Master. But that’s just me.
