How many beaters do you need?

I’m often reading here what I perceive to be justifications for watch buying along the lines of: “it’ll be good as a beater”.

So how many beaters do you have, and is this really an euphemism for “couldn’t resist buying this thing which I don’t really need for my collection but hey, sometimes I just can’t help myself”?

Show us you favourite “beater”.

This French-made Squale-cased diver is one of my go-to beaters. It has a lot of features I enjoy in a vintage watch, so it's something a collector can appreciate. But it's already beat up a bit, and not terribly valuable, so I don't care if it collects a few dings. Personally, I only need one or two beaters, but there's really no limit on the number one could have. And one person's beater could be another person's grail.

They mean watch for daily use or work maybe as some people like to weae their top watches for special ocassions. Sometimes it can be whatever watch or a likeable watch found at a great price.

I would have 2 or 3.

I currently have zero “beaters”, just my 2 Omega divers and a Speedy. And a vintage Seamaster as a dress watch.

I don’t think i come across many scenarios where a beater watch would be needed. I take dings but never anything more than that.

I refuse to call any of my watches "beaters" but there are some that I am less attached to than others that might be more expendable, but if I'm worried about that, I'm in the wrong place.

I used to call my vintage Seiko 6115-8110 diver my beater. It’s the watch I wore whenever I traveled abroad... might have to reassess as prices for excellent examples are going up.

beaters would just cut into my “cost per wear” equation that I use to justify my addiction to Omegas

That would not be a beater to me!

Well, it's all relative, isn't it. A previous owner apparently used this as a beater. Both sides of the case look like it was regularly worn as the owner dug through containers full of rocks.

Compared to my other watches... it’s a beater.
But, I looked in my desk and found this true beater... don’t know how it got there, maybe one of my kids didn’t want it... doesn’t seem to work...can’t find the crown to wind, and it has a cracked bezel. Qualify as a beater?

I bought my Seamaster 120 166.027 with the intention of using it as a beater. I couldn’t bring myself to treat it like that. I then bought a well used ranchero 2990 with the same intention. That didn’t happen either 🤨

Now that I'm retired I only need one good one. If you can afford a Pre-owned Rolex Sub, No B&P necessary.
Just as good if not better but for sure more reasonable, at least half the cost, a SMP300 preferably a 2254.50.

Recently bought this after reading about it at Fratellowatches, describing it as robust, thick, heavy and solid as tank. Justified it as a Gentleman's Beater indeed. Not disappointed so far.

After some reflection, I have to admit that I did buy a watch intended to be a "beater" if I had occasion for one.

Marathon general purpose mechanical (automatic).

Here’s my daily beater. It’s so nice to do daily chores, chop wood, fix plumbing projects, and dig up asphalt with my pneumatic drill without worrying a lick about the watch. You guys should try it...

My daily is a Sinn 104, a bit more interesting daily is the Sinn 103 and am looking to buy an EZM3 for the ultimate diver tool beater.

That's really a very good watch. Please post a wrist shot as well.
I don't have guts to use it as a Beater of any sort. You have real deep pockets sir.
