How bad is this redial? How much does it affect the value?

Yes I’m winding it fully and I can turn it maybe 8 turns
That doesn't sound right at all. People describe winding in different ways, but from stopped you should be able to put about 60 winds on until the mainspring is full by which I don't mean full rotations but 60 flicks of your finger and thumb. By any measure 8 doesn't sound enough.

I do think it sounds like your watch, nice though it is, is in need of a service. Was this a dealer or ebay purchase, private or business seller?

I still don’t know what degrading means though sorry
It just means that old parts are not as pristine as new ones. Over the years, they wear down or ‘degrade’, like we suspect your main spring has done. Ie. It does not coil as tightly as it did when the watch was new. As in ‘deteriorate’, ‘decay’, or ‘degenerate’. 😀

Ebay. My other vintage watch is Longines and it runs a good 36 hours on each winding.

Ok so when you wind it until you feel resistance and can't wind it any further, it only runs for ~8 hours until it stops?

Ok its not healthy then. You can either take it on the chin and get the watch serviced. That will run to circa £200 depending on who you use, or you can easily unwind the deal since ebay will always side with a buyer who opens a legitimate SNAD* claim like this (in fact they will usually side with a buyer who files a fictitious or vexatious claim too).

I am afraid this is all too common, if you look back at my 3rd post on p1 you will notice I factored in an extra £200 for exactly this occurrence. Seasoned collectors will factor this in every time they buy a watch, sometimes you get lucky and it isn't needed but more often than not it is. It is best to assume that ebay sellers lie, as very often they do. Unless they can produce documentary proof, the 'service' never happened.

Whereabouts do you live or work? 😀
The membership of OF is worldwide.
Someone will be able to recommend a watch repairer near to where you are?

I’ve spoken to the vendor and he’s offered to send it back to the person who does the servicing for him to be re-checked. It managed 12 hours before stopping today. The crown feels very stiff to turn and doesnt turn very far (my old
Longines is totally different). I’d like to keep the watch- but have it repaired - so will send it back to him. He said it had had the mainspring replaced- not sure how that tallies with the winding being so stiff though ?

Old?

Longines?

We love both "old" and "Longines" and we love photos.
