Listed as sold out... I have my suspicions. While I have no doubt there are 96 people out there with more money than sense, the comments across the board have been BRUTAL.

I don’t doubt it. Some Hodinkee LEs have not immediately sold out - the 50 piece Zenith limited edition with a 50 year warrantee for $19,200 was released in January and the shop is still showing it as available (https://shop.hodinkee.com/products/...l-g381-limited-edition?variant=29737629155403). Other LEs have taken days to sell out. So I don’t think Hodinkee marks everything as “sold out” within a day to hype the exclusivity or cover up for duds.

Maybe it is gauche and impolite, but I'm not going to hesitate calling anyone who bought this a complete fool.

You're being polite

Sees post about new Hodinkee product.
Remembers the Hodinkee effect on prices of my much-desired MK40.
Opens tab for eBay to look for vintage JLC travel clocks.
Sees they are still (mostly) very reasonably priced.
Prepares to buy one for $99.
Realizes I don't even like travel clocks and especially this ugly shit.
Smugly drags Hodinkee clock in a post.
Kicks back and waits for the likes.

About four years ago I bought this 18kt Vulcain Cricket in a massive 18kt rose gold case for a lot less than $5,900. And it is more functional as the Hondinkee knock off. But a lot of hipster's rely on the Hodinkee name....it's like Apple or Tesla on a much smaller scale, people buy the name and not necessarily the product.

In all seriousness, it's sad to see the evolution of Hodinkee. It started off 10 years ago as a great place to read and review watches. I remember reading them around 2009-2010, and the articles were well-written and you could tell there was a lot of thought behind it. It was engaging and the content was actually more relatable. Years go by, and articles and stories just seem to become stale with a few exceptions, and it seems like it turned into one giant marketing scheme to become a major retailer. I think Ben and the team only care about one thing, and you don't need three guesses as to what that is. I don't care to read much of their stuff anymore, and that's a shame because when it was good, it was good.
I just read an article saying pretty much which you just said online a few days ago. They talked how how it was/what it was and what it is now. This seems to be taking an even larger step in the wrong direction.

Well it did sell out apparently. Odd

Doubtful but I’m sure if I get on the “waitlist,” I’ll get an “it’s available!” email. After the backlash the last thing they want is for it show as available for 1.5 years. They got enough problems with this launch

Pure speculation, but ever wondered how some dealers are able to sell watched at incredible prices, e.g rolex 5513 mint all original NOS BLAH BLAH for like 32k euros or 10-20% above market value..... and they get sold?

I suspect they didn't quite sell it, but moved it on to another dealer to spin it off, and they put "sold" on their websites/forum thread posts .... to create that artificial demand.

Not saying that Hodinkee would do this, but who knows? just some food for thought 😜

they have proven that they are not above doing this so it’s plausible

This is the most ridiculous watch related release and product that I have ever witnessed. I can't believe that it is physically possible to have your head so far up your own ass.

That travel crock might have sold out in less than a day, but the massacre that Hodinkee have been taking on social media and watch forums has disintegrated the brand image to the point where it has become a laughing stock. Imagine admitting to buying one of those, you will be laughed out the room....hey whats your degree in?.....Stupidity?
