··I might rise, but I refuse to shine. In above average condition for age. Keeping excellent time. Serviced in early 2022 by Omega qualified watchmaker.
Rare small T dial Heuer BUNDESWEHR SG1550 (Issued to the German airforce (c.1965)
Valjoux 230 movement with flyback function. 18,000 bph
The small T dial was the original of these watches. The dials were later officially modified with the addition of the circle-3H to make the hazard of tritium more readily apparent to people in occupations handling the watches, and at some point many of the watches were redialed altogether with service dials that used no tritium, so they had no small T and no circle-3H.
1. This watch was issued to the German Air Force. (Issue markings on case back)
2. This is a “T” only dial - small T above the 6
3. Heuer logo
4. Clear Font - no numbers are cut off by the subdials
5. Hands original but re-coloured with a safe alternative to vintage Tritium paint that has the same look and texture by expert watchmaker.
6. Moderate case back polish from wear over the decades as to be expected for a working watch. In direct light the engraving is not as easy to see as it is in non-direct lighting due to the natural polishing over the years.
7. Stainless steel 43mm case (20mm lug width) with very minimal markings (please study photos for condition) and signs of wear.
The case of the Heuer 1550 SG Flyback is made from stainless steel with a satin finish. The case measures 43 mm in diameter and is 13 mm in thickness. The construction of the case is composed of two main pieces, with a 4-screw case back design. This design allows easy access to the movement for service/repair purposes. The case construction is made so that the movement loads in through the front, and the screwed-in case back attaches the bezel, which simultaneously secures the crystal. It's likely that this design facilitated the quick and easy exchange of movements, bezels and crystals for the military contracted watchmakers - important for watches taking on the rough daily life as a military pilot's accessory.
