Quite right. And I personally do much prefer the Hesalite as well.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Interestingly, I have recently purchased a lovely Grand Seiko with a compound curved Saphire crystal that has AR on the inside, which looks just like an old school Acrylic crystal.
No milky ring around the perimeter.
Which GS did you buy?

I always lean towards hesalite. It has a warmer look to it IMO. Plus, more of a vibtvin vibe which I prefer as well .
Agreed. There’s something about plexi that’s sexy

If Panerai can do a no-milky-ring-domed-saphire-crystal why can’t Omega?

Oris has achieved a pretty great domed sapphire without a milky ring in the new Big Crown models too. Never understood why this seems to only be a problem with Omega.

Why are they so dead set against micro adjustable braclets?

Have fun

This is a debate that will rumble on forever. In my book, it's quite simple - if you want an authentic, NASA-qualified Moonwatch, go for hesalite. If you're less bothered about that than you are about scratching the thing, go for sapphire.

I am in the hunt for a moon watch right now. The hesalite looks great (and is historically accurate, of course), but the 1863 movement is SO beautiful that I HAVE to have the see-thru case back. Mine will be the sapphire version.

As weird as it may sound, the 'milk ring' created by the sapphire crystal on this watch actually gives it a more vintage vibe to me. Crazy, right?

I will admit, if I were going to sell one of mine, (and I probably will in the future) it would be the hesalite. I don’t mind the look of the sapphire crystal, and I think it gives an interesting aesthetic. If you look at it expecting it to be the same watch as the hesalite, you will be disappointed. If you look at it as a completely different watch, it’s easier to love it. And the see through case back looks really good.

Also, I see myself buying a vintage speedmaster in the future, and for that reason, I don’t think I would hesitate to sell my modern hesalite when that time comes.

SBGW 253.
That is the one that I had reservation, absolutely stunning, but at the end I had to pass it. The timing was just not right. I still regret to pass it sometimes. Later I picked up my first GS: SBGJ003

Your watch is a great reference.

I wear mine strictly as a dress watch.
I was looking literally for decades for something exactly like it in that size and preferably with a manual wind and then i completely stumbled across the reference. I also completely missed the whole GS thing last year.

They're still rather easily acquired at a good price.
Occasionally even brand new ones are advertised.

Next stop will be a Platinum Eichi II. I think.
Then I'm completely done😀

If I buy Platinum Eichii II, I think I'll be done too. Done collecting and done with my life as my wife will kill me

Congrats on acquiring both and thanks for the awesome photos.

I think these are probably the best photos comparing both models in the *whole* web.

Good thing i didnt have this post yet when i got my hesalite. Otherwise i would have suffered from analysis paralysis. It’s like choosing among OU and UGA and OSU for that last playoff spot and not having a deadline to do so.

I have owned both models multiple times and while I liked the bubbly look of the hesalite model, the sapphire model is my choice. It’s made to hold up better for everyday wear. Plus the 1863 movement is beautiful!

I just wanted to make this for all of those people out there who are trying to decide between the Hesalite and Sapphire versions of the Speedmaster Pro. I remember searching for as many pictures as I could find before I made my decision, and I thought I'd try to add a few more.

After about a month of thinking it over, and seeing them both in a boutique, I decided on the hesalite model, reference 311.30.42.30.01.005. One month later, I found a sapphire model (ref: 3573.50.00) locally at a price I couldn't pass up. So now I have both.

In the awful lighting of the boutique, the hesalite model looked by far the better of the two. This is what swayed me initially. However, since owning the sapphire model and viewing it in normal lighting, my view on the sapphire sandwich has changed. While I will agree that it doesn't quite match the hesalite crystal, the sapphire creates a very unique look that I still enjoy. And the see-through caseback is a big plus in my book.

Can't go wrong with either imo.

Sorry if the picture quality isn't that good. I only have my phone for pictures.

Moon thing aside it is funny to me that people say don’t buy a junghans because it is plexiglass, but it’s pretty much the same as heslite. I scratched mine and everyone was like “I told you so” so now I only buy sapphire.

Did you try Polywatch? It easily removes scratches. Can‘t do this with Sapphire though. 😀
