Help purchasing Vintage Omega

Hello, new member here and looking to purchase my first watch. It's been tough finding exactly what I want, but I think I've narrowed it down to a Vintage Omega Seamaster, automatic with a date. I've been browsing Ebay and Chrono24, and I've come across this watch, but it seems to be the same pictures of the same watch in several different listing. I notice the seller always seems to be out of Japan.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/3961573497...90&brand=OMEGA&_trksid=p2332490.c102020.m5276

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2265730057...lp:2332490&itmmeta=01JKC702DZ0AM0E7616PC9EJQA

Is this a red flag? Any advice or suggestions for someone in my position?

Looks like a nice watch to me. Japanese sellers seem to list a watch numerous times and at different price points. No idea why. Much cheaper on chrono24 that eBay. Good luck

This is most common in Japan and IMO is a red flag. It is because they are resellers and don't actually own the watch they are advertising. It is a pretty crappy practice and leads to many issues. Firstly there is a good chance they won't be able to actually source the watch. Secondly you are not dealing with the real seller so if there is any issue at all the reseller will wash their hands of you. Thirdly even if legit, if the reseller gets ripped off they will pass the loss it straight on to you. If you can find the original seller, ie they respond to requests for particular pictures that is fine, but generally the actual watch is being sold cheap locally and not advertised internationally. It is a practice that can lead to scamming and disappointment.

Logically the lowest price is likely to be the original seller, though it might not be and may in fact just be a scammer fishing with stolen photos.

A shiny 'like new' dial with corroded hands, wrong crown, rounded lugs, and a very thick font, could be a repainted dial IMO though I don't have a final proof for that

924 $ + 148 $ shipment + VAT/customs on top???

For me this is a pass!

You know I didn't even look closely at the photo but I agree it is suspicious. I too call redial.

Thank you, I’m not jumping the gun on anything. I’ve actually been searching here and there for several years trying to narrow down what I like and finding something worth purchasing. This went from having no idea about watches in general to focusing on this type of Seamaster. I’m still learning and very novice, but I’ve come a little way and now happy I stumbled on this forum.

Oddly enough, my dream watch would be this model, but I would kind of prefer a white/cream dial. I understand that usually means it’s a redial and I know most collectors wouldn’t like that, but I don’t feel like I would mind. I just wouldn’t want to pay “original condition” prices. It’s been hard finding something that checks all my boxes 🙃

The photo looks a little wonky so I don't want to jump to conclusions about the dial, but the condition of the case certainly wouldn't give me joy.

I understand why everything you mentioned would be a red flag, except the rounded lugs? I really like the style of them.

I see what you mean about the case, but this one seems nicer than a lot I see on eBay haha. I don’t think I’d mind one with a little honest wear, but maybe if I can find one cheaper. Can I expect to pay $1k+ for this type of watch? Do they ever go up or down in price?

Have a look at this thread scroll down there are some nice photos of 166.010 which you might like and it’s a great watch. The 166.024 is more pricey chronometer version. This is a highly recommended reference.

I see. Yea, reference numbers are still a little foreign to me. I understand they relate to the different models, but I don’t know which are which or to expect with each. There’s a listing on Chrono24 that I’m drooling over that says it’s a 2849-4SC.

https://www.chrono24.com/omega/omeg...sc-cal503--serviced-from-1958--id38124340.htm

Unfortunately they don’t ship to US, and it’s a little above my budget. Not sure I can expect to find anything like this for cheaper though.

It looks similar to the one I listed above from Japan, which says it’s 14762-61SC. Any insight on these references?

Honestly, price is for you to figure out, to some extent, but in my experience C24 prices are almost always greatly inflated. I don't think that a gold-capped example is generally more valuable than a SS example (apples to apples in condition), and $1k would be a high price for a 166.010 in mediocre condition without a bracelet.
