I have this watch which belonged to my dad I have dated it to 1939 by the serial number . I believe the case is gold . Unfortunately it is not in working order at the moment .I’m trying to find out more about it . It was with my dads stuff he passed away so know little about it really . He served in the Second World War so not sure if it is a military watch ..

You may well be able to learn more about your watch after you learn more about taking MUCH clearer, better lit, better focussed pictures. The information printed inside the case back is a total wash out. But right off the cuff, it looks like it might be an English Dennison case. So work on giving us a better picture of the case back marks. It is impossible to comment on the state of the mechanism with these pictures.

Hello and welcome dear Sue,

sorry for your loss, this is a lovely heirloom. Not military at all, but a very nice dial in the art deco style of the 1930s, so it’s consistent with the serial number information you looked up.

A good professional watchmaker should be able to service it and make it fully functional, however you’d have to be careful as it’s not shock protected, and not water resistant either.

As a woman who likes vintage watches I’ve never had a problem wearing mine so long as you’re careful not to hit them, not to wear them in rainy weather, and must be very careful not to drop it inadvertently.

If you say where you are people might have recommendations for good watchmakers. It’s very important to avoid your local jeweler or unknown watchmakers- as you want to make sure they do not try to « refresh » your watch, only service the movement inside.

As for the pictures of the inside markings on the case, I suggest you place a mug near your watch, and prop up your phone flat on the mug. You will get a clear picture of those fine engravings and people will be able to tell you more.

Best regards

PS if and when you wear your father’s watch, you should also be careful not to spray perfume or apply hand cream while the watch is on your wrist, you should do these things BEFORE you put on your watch.
The reason is that humidity or cream could enter the watch through the winder, and over time cause destructive corrosion inside the mechanism.
