Help identifying and buying omega constellation

Hi all, I am looking to purchase a vintage omega constellation watch, I have found one from a prominent antiques centre in England. The dealer seems to be very vague with the details of the watch, except assuring me everything is original bar the strap. He doesn’t seem to know the movement in the watch and I will have to wait a few weeks before he can have the back taken off. Is this watch a good deal or should I wait until he has the back taken off? He has offered to sell it at £1890. I also noticed the case has a prominent rose gold colour where as the dial is gold, it is also meant to included the original gold omega buckle that has been transferred over but no pictures of that.

It has been redialled and is rather expensive. One to avoid IMO.

welcome @solarising

Just as well you posted here before spending your hard-earned.

It does look like a rose gold capped case and yellow gold furniture on the dial - not a combination Omega did - except the hands, which also look rose.

The pics are (very) poor but the watch isn't worth a third of the new asking price.

The dial has been repainted and the case is quite soft
The box doesn't belong to the watch.
It would have been useful to see inside the paperwork - it may have had information on the watch.

Hope that helps your buying considerations.

Thanks for you feedback, it’s much appreciated. Do you know where would be a good place to start looking?

Thank you for your detailed response! I too noticed the pictures weren’t great and wondered if it was on purpose, I haven’t physically seen the watch in person it was through email communication. I asked the rep to look at the paperwork to see if there was any information about the model but he told me there wasn’t. Do you have any recommendations for where I could look to potentially buy a decent model? I would really like to own one.

I would like to think the pics weren’t blurry on purpose - which antiques emporium was the watch in?

There is sometimes watch details on the Omega paperwork but not always.
However, since the box isn’t a Constellation box, the Omega papers may be from elsewhere.

Dealers aren’t always scrupulous and want their pound of flesh ( as you have found).

Take your time and do watch the recommended threads on OF and also set up a watch recon alert for auctions that include Constellations.
You can get much better deals that way.

Buying Constellations can be tricky - Get to know your subject by reading the Constellation threads on OF and Desmond’s blog.

This is from Hemswell antique centres in Lincolnshire. According to the rep, the dealer is very reputable and likely someone I’ve seen on TV before however, I haven’t a clue. All I know is it’s surprising how little information was provided. Again, thank you for the blog post link, I need to read up a little more it seems.

I see that Hemswell is billed as "Europe's Largest Antiques Centre" - so it's an umbrella for numerous dealers of all kinds of stuff. Not all of them will know much about vintage watches, and I can assure you that you have been talking to one of them, regardless of how much TV work they do. If they are(?) "reputable", it's not for providing basic product information or asking realistic prices. Sorry, I'm just venting because that watch is absolute garbage, and they tried to take you for a ride. One of our leading experts here has given you great advice, and I just wish I could match his calm restraint. You have done the right thing to swing by here, welcome to the forum, and best wishes for your watch journey.

Do plenty of reading on this forum and keep an eye on the private sales section.
I know Hemswell very well. The staff there are great but they are certainly not experts in all fields, least of all watches. Unless that’s a new seller, they don’t really have a watch dealer aside from general dealers who occasionally have the odd watch and most certainly aren’t experts in all the details of vintage Omega.

If you need additional opinions, I will add that the terrible photos make things very difficult to judge, but even so the watch appears to be in below average condition, and perhaps poor condition. I don't think there's really a need to discuss it further if you are looking for a nice collectible piece.
